Need help figuring out whether I can do this

This forum has always been a great help in times of trouble. Hopefully someone here has attempted what I am about to do.
The Scoop:

I have cable internet. Brother does not and would like to mooch for a bit until he can afford it. I already have a setup currently that looks like this -
ISP====>Cable Modem====>WRT54G====>Computer

Problem is...he is around 300 to 400 feet away...so keep that in mind.

I picked up another WRT54G to experiment with the wireless bridge tutorial that user1234 was so kind to post using the alchemy firmware. I successfully updated one WRT54G but the other is a newer version and isn't upgradeable using custom firmware. So no problem. I hooked up my laptop and bam...had an internet connection with the wireless bridge. I made sure my wireless was disabled and that the connection was truely coming off of my NIC via RJ45. So I SAW it working. But when I bring it down to brother's house it just won't pick up the network. I thought I just don't have a strong enough signal. But the crazy part is my laptop still can pick up my house's wireless. I surfed google for a few seconds to make sure it wasn't just the cache. I just don't get it...I brought it back to my house and played around with the router and at first it didn't work(which i thought to be strange). But after renaming the SSID it started up again and worked flawlessly...again attempted at brother's house with no success.

So I picked up WAP54G and am not sure if this is really going to work. I have done quite a bit of searching and am still a bit foggy on what I should try with this or if it is even worth the effort. Any input would be so much appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

300 - 400 need a clear line of sight and Directional Antenna.

If you do not have a clear line of sight, I doubt that it would work.

WDS and or Repeater would depend on the environment as well.

Post a description on what the signal has to go through in order travel from one place to the other.

I was afraid of that. The signal will have to travel through a couple plaster walls and a few trees before reaching the house. Maybe he should just wait until he can afford broadband. It's just that I find it VERY odd that my laptop and it's dinky wireless adapter can connect to my home when a souped up WRT54G can't see a darn thing. My connection was only a couple bars on my laptop but I could surf somewhat...

If you got a weak signal on the Laptop you might be able to "Swing" something, but you have to be prepared to spend.

First step lay a cable from were the source Router is and install the WAP with a directional Antenna pointing to the brother house.

Works? Good?

Does not work? Flash the second WRT54G and place it in a Windows at the brother?s house looking at the WAP at your House.

Configure the second Router as WDS, pray, 😉 and might be that you would have a nice connection.

Wirelessly Bridging Home / Network.
