I am still relatively new to building computers, but not totally inept. I am installing MSI K7T Pro2-A into an Antec SX830 case with an AMD Thunderbird 1Ghz Socket A, and an nVidia 64MB DDR GeForce 256 AGP+. After I had installed everything, I powered it up. Everything turns on, but the monitor displays nothing turns on and goes into sleep mode right away, and the DLed lights are all red. In reference to the Dled error message: The processor is brand new and I have checked it to make sure that it has been installed properly. Does anyone have any idea? I would hate to have to send the processor back if it could possibly be something else. During the holidays, it will take another month to get a replacement. God No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry about the X post. I couldn't find how to delete that.

Make sure the CPU is in the socket nice and snug. Perhaps after pulling down the lever, push down on the cpu lightly. When I first installed my cpu it did the same thing. After doing the above it started to work... new sockets maybe sometimes need to be worked in at first.

Samarian,

3 questions:

1) Is your power supply AMD-approved?

2) Have you tried moving your memory around a bit?

3) What is your HSF setup? Are you by any chance using a retail CPU?

The Pro2A is pretty darn good a shutting down *fast* if it senses extraordinary high temps. The reason I ask if you are using the retail HSF is that it is *very* easy to leave the last bit of the plastic film on the thermal pad. Even if you *think* you pulled it all off, double-check the pad.

And how would I know this?:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I had *exactly* the same problem, with the possible exception of some ok cold boots when just turning the machine on. Turns out I had gone hog wild with the thermal compound, and when I cleaned it up and applied it in the proper manner (just on the Duron CORE), and reattached everything, it booted fine. I then added back the network card and sound card, fixed a BIOS conflict with the onboard audio by disabling it, and now it works like a charm. Somehow I managed to kill my ADSL modem in the process, but now I can play games at least... Need my UT Online tho.

Check that heatsink! Good seating with proper grease!

Also make sure your video card is seated ALL the way into the AGP slot. Sometimes the way the mobo sits in the case will keep the vid card from seating all the way.
