Hey everyone, I'm in need of some networking help. I'm actually studying in the field of networking right now, but my knowledge is still limited and I figured this would be the best place to get some advice. My current wireless network is set up with a fairly cheap router. I have decent signal strength in my house, but I also have a small guest house that sits about 75 to 100 ft away from the main house. Right now I can get a very weak signal (one bar) from the router when standing in the guest house.
My initial thought was to just run some cable to the guest house and set up an access point out there. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, but I also don't want the signal to drop constantly. As I said, the current router is somewhat old and cheap. I'm not sure how reliable it will be in the future. My main concerns are with which brands or equipment to purchase, such as the AP or any other devices you think I need.
Could I just purchase a really powerful router that would reach the guest house? Any links to certain products would be great. My current internet speed is about 30 Mbps down. There will be a lot of streaming, downloading, etc. in the guest house. If you need any more details, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
