I was getting ready to defragment my HDD so I analyzed it first. As always, the performance has been degraded due to moderate fragmenting. Anyways, Diskeeper Pro told me I should expand the Master File Table (MFT) on this volume by using the configure MFT/Paging File option. I have looked at this option but I am not exactly sure what I should expand it to.
Now, on the menu to modify the MFT or Paging File, it says:
The MFT on this disk volume is low on available expansion space, which with continued growth can result in MFT fragmentation. However, using Frag Shield to extend the MFT may reduce the total volume free space to less than 20%. Therefore, it is recommended that you delete any unneeded files to create more free space on the volume before running the Frag Shield MFT extension utility.
From what I take from that, is that if I extend the MFT/Paging File, it could delete files that I need due to the MFT needing more space than is available.
Any information on what I should extend the MFT to as well as information on what could happen if I were to configure it incorrectly, will be greatly appreciated.
