Need help: Error joining a Domain from win7 Ultimate

im able to join the domain from the 2x XP machines.
the error is:
The following error occured attempting to join the domain
The network path was not found.

the server is running 2008R2,
the domain is set to: xxx.com
the IP on win7 machine has been set to static, preferred DNS to DS IP.
when i tried to join the domain xxx.com, error is: xxx.com could not be contacted
when i tried xxx (without .com) then got the above error

Make sure your computer's DNS servers are pointed at your domain controllers.

Make sure you're not trying to re-join a computer with a name that has been added before. If you are, you have to log into Active Directory and delete the old device first.
 
preferred DNS pointed to DC IP
and computer name is unique on the network

in fact i did the same with XP machines and it was all good

Some basics:

1. Already tried rebooting?

2. For sure have Internet access on the Win7 machine? i.e CNN.com?

3. All the latest Windows updates installed?

this really drives me crazy.
 
Can You :>
(1) ping the domain server by IP and get a reply?
(2) ping the domain server by Name and get a reply?
(3) ping the domain name and get a reply?
