i dont know if any of you are familiar w/ software known as GAIN (Gator Media software). anyways, its an annoying piece of software that gets installed along with certain freeware/shareware which can't be installed unless GAIN is installed along with it. it pops up in IE just like those annoying pop-up windows. anyways, i don't recall ever installing software related to GAIN, but somehow GAIN ended up on my system. i've run through the installation steps provided by the software, which actually runs a search for any GAIN related software on your system, so you know what needs to be removed in order to remove GAIN also. anyways, when i run the search, no GAIN related software comes up. so of course GAIN keeps running and showing up when i surf the net. i've tried disabling it in the startup tab of the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe), hit apply and OK. but when i open up the msconfig.exe right after i close it, GAIN is still set to load on reboot or restart. restarting to let the changes take effect does nothing since it can't be disabled in the first place. so i think my last resort is editing it out of the registry. i know the registry shouldn't be messed with unless you absolutely know what you're doing, so i'm hoping someone here does. i've edited the registry before for Office 2000 reasons, and done so successfully without removed any vital system files. i did this b/c Office2000 only lets you use the software 50 times before registering the software. so after my trial period was up, i uninstalled and reinstalled, but i was unable to use Office2000 again b/c the trial key info was kept in the registry. i was told how to delete any Office2000 info from the registry, reinstalled it again, and my 50 day trial period started all over agin 😉. so i'd like to do the same with the GAIN software if it will rid it of my system. well i know that was long-winded, but if anyone knows what to remove from the registry, or if this will help at all, please reply...thanks, Eric.
