need help directly networking notebook and desktop

I have a brand spanking new desktop and notebook-- both with 3com NICs.. and I am trying to get the 2 of um directly networked for some file sharing through windows ME. Problem is.. when directly connected.. they dont see each other.. however when i connect them through my Linksys router however-- they see each other and all is well...
this of course.. makes no sense to me.. and any help would be much appreciated.
 
are you using a crossover cable when directly connecting them? if not, then that's your problem.

also, for future reference, this should be posted in the networking forum
 
i'd say make it, but frankly you can pick a short one up for like 5 or 6 bucks, so that probably makes more sense. just ask for a "crossover cat5 cable"
