Need help determining if this motherboard can support a *slot-a" thunderbird chip.

I have an older computer from gateway that I would like drop a faster processor in. Here are the only specs I can find on the mobo: http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/JABIL/4000594/400059418.shtml

Now, how do I figure out if this motherboard can support a 950mhz or a 1ghz SLOT A thunderbird processor, or will I have to stick with a classic Athlon. Also, If I have to stick with a classic, what was the highest speed that was produced in the slot-a classic athlon?

The AMD 750 chipset is a SLOT A chipset, isn't it? The mobo should support the highest clocked Slot A CPU's providing it has BIOS support for them. Amybe you post a pic of the board with the labels inside so we can find out who the OEM is. They should have more info on the board.

Whatever you do, don't just put a Slot A T-Bird in without knowing that it does for sure because, the compatibility of Slot A T-Bird's on AMD 750 and KX133 boards was not as high as you would think. I would suggest like RanDum said, post a pic of the board so that we can trey to identify who the OEM was for it and then go from there. If you do have to stick with a Classic Athlon, the fastest you can go would be a 1GHz.

Honestly, you may end up in a situation where buying a new CPU wouldn't be worth the cost. Hopping over to Pricewatch, you can get an Athlon 850 T-Bird Slot A for as cheap as $68, for $2 more, you can get a 1.4GHz 266fsb Socket A T-Bird (or for $15-20 less, an Athlon XP 1600+). And a 1GHz Athlon Classic Slot A costs $200+ (and only 2 stores AFAIK have it). Normally, I'd say, go get an ECS K7S5A, and a cheap Athlon XP 1600+ for $100 total and reuse the RAM you have... but that Gateway case would likely give you problems. So, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Start by getting a pic of the board (or identifying yourself the mobo OEM) and we'll go from there. Jesus is LORD!!!

Can you check if there are any BIOS upgrades for the mobo? Each BIOS revision should have a release note indicating what kind of changes it brings (like additional/enhanced CPU support, etc..). The OEM (Nabil?) doesn't have any info at all. It would have been better if the OEM is Asus or Intel since they have info available for their older boards.

Curiously, the board looked like an Intel board, with the green PCB and the enlarged metallic linings around the motherboard mounting holes. But we all know Intel doesn't make mobos with AMD chipsets🙂. Maybe Nabil is a sub contractor for Intel boards?

You can get a bios update here
linky It's dated 1/2/2001 the tbirds came out mid 2000.
Found a site that says you can use the t-birds with a bios update hopefully that's it here is the site says just a bios update needed.
