Edit: New question...

OK, we're doing this again. :)

From here.

xx080910.jpg

Is the item on the upper-left from:
2008 Candy Plasma Blue (upper right)
- or -
2009 Candy Thunder Blue (lower left)
- or -
2010 Metallic Island Blue (lower right)
???

I would assume '08CPB because the logo looks white instead of gray but when I look up actual photos of people's '10MIB it almost invariably looks white. I assume that, under flash, the '09CTB looks that way as well.

Thanks!

Old post: I want to buy a part from a buyer on eBay who does not know which year model a particular part comes from. In this case the 2008 blue model of the Ninja 250R had a slightly different blue than the 2009 model ("Candy Plasma" Blue vs. "Candy Thunder" Blue), which isn't immediately apparant until you put the wrong part on the bike.

Obviously, comparing photographs by eye which were made with different settings and lighting is difficult. To compound the matter, I am color-blind. Is anyone able to, say, use a tool that can compare the 2008 CP Blue to the 2009 CT Blue and then determine which one this third picture likely matches? Does such a tool/technique exist?

Here is a link to the auction:

Thanks!

Impossible due to white balance issues. You would need a reference color at the very least.

Let's say, one had a little red in it for a slightly purple hue and one didn't (not a real example). It's not possible to detect red as the difference and then see if there's a little red in the one on eBay?

There are comparable marketing shots of the 2008 and 2009 colors.

It is hard to be precise with non-color-matched photos, but IMO it looks far more like the Candy Thunder Blue than the Candy Plasma Blue. The Candy Plasma leans a bit more to the gray/silver and has a satiny finish, while the Candy Thunder is a more saturated blue and is pretty glossy.

Candy Plasma:

(From Google Image Search. I know there's different lighting for these two photos, but if you do GIS then you will notice the difference that's represented here. A link to the marketing shots would be welcome, as I didn't find them and they probably have similar lighting.)

Thanks for your help.
Hopefully these images will embed without going all goatse...

When I look at my CP Blue it does appear as if there is a slight metallic sparkle. IIRC, the Colorrite paint is 2 coats of different paint for 2008, one coat for 2009.

FWIW, the seller said that there are tribal graphics added on that part which color-shift from green to blue depending on the angle, so that could throw us off.

Unless the eBay pics are wildly oversaturated and/or the color temp is completely off, I'd have to agree that it looks much closer to Thunder than Plasma.

I trust yours and slashbinslashbash's eyes. Also, there were a lot more blue 2009s sold. Thanks!

As others said (a year ago) it's really not possible to do more than guess since anyone can take a photo of an item and have the colors turn out completely different just based on the lighting, white point and other settings of their camera, and post processing. With nothing more than these pictures, it looks most like the 2009 (Thunder). Again, it's impossible to know if even the manufacturer's pictures are accurate so you don't know if you're really comparing it to the correct color. If you look at the photo of a 2009 bike that slashbinslashbash posted, the Ninja logo is white while the logo in the "reference" photo looks more gray, and the 2008 bike that he posted definitely has a silver logo while the reference photo is white...

If the seller really doesn't know which model of bike the part is from, the best option would be to find the part number on the part itself (should be somewhere on the back/inside of the part, then look up that part number on the manufacturer's web site.
