New to the forums after leaving the enthusist pc populace for a few years, was looking for a little help deciding on whether to Watercool my older system or just bite the bullit and upgrade now.
Old System:
2.6c p4 using the bundled HSF, currently running just shy of 3Ghz with a FSB of 230.
1GB (4x256MB) (2x PC3200 Geil, 2xPC3200 patriot) (timings of 4,4,4,8 @230)
7600GS AGP 256MB ****** video card, upgraded it 2months ago to try and add a little more lifetime.
P4C800-E mobo.
Currently with air cooling i can hit upto 3.2ish speeds, but its not very stable, 3.0 seems to be about the cap, with temps there still peaking @57c under load (1.6v). My results however seem poor compared to most of what i've seen with similar setups.
If i kept using the old system I'd try and sell the 1GB of ram i currently have and go for a 2GB kit, and watercool it to get more of an OC out of it.
The watercooling setup i was thinking of:
CPU block: DD RDX for 478
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/2085/...478_CPU_Water_Block.html?tl=g30c85s141
-or-
D-Tek FuZion (If i can manage to mount it to my 478)
http://www.dtekcustoms.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=182&HS=1
GPU block: DD Maze4-peltier setup
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1985/...Included_MAZE4-1GPU.html?tl=g30c87s145
1 question i have, is that the Maze4 seems to have similar mounting setups for both GPU and the chipset, would it be possible to use this on my 875P chipset? (I honestly don't beleive so, but worth the question)
Chipset: Maze4 for 875
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1984/...65875_Chipset_Block.html?tl=g30c89s149
Pump: MCP655 (was also contemplating DD-D5 about same price and performance, If anyone can seriously suggest 1 over the other I'd like to hear it)
res: Not sure how i want to mount 1 in the system yet, suggestions on this are appreciated as well.
radiator: this I can't really decide on, keep flip flopping between going heatercore, or using a black ice series. heater core for the relatively low cost, or the Black Ice GTX120 for sheer performance (only have 1x 120mm case fan spot on the back, so thats the biggest i can go with the case, any modding suggestions or good other mounting spots would be helpful)
Overall cost for the WC setup (especially if i go with the pelt blocks) would be over $300. I guess my overall question is whether or not it is worth building a WC setup to try and eek another year or so out of this system or just upgrade to a new C2D setup. I like the WC idea as i can reuse some of it on the next system i build, but not sure if its worth paying for specialized blocks for my 478 setup.
Thanks in advance for any suggustions critiques etc. let me know if left anything out information wise that would help to decide.
Edit: I was also thinking about getting a tuniq tower for the cpu as it supports 478 and LGA775 so i could use it for aircooling when i upgrade. Also was thinking of getting a Thermalright HR-05 for the northbridge, though its future compatability looks limited.
