I currently have an EVGA 7800gtx/256 and trying to decide if I should step up to the 512mb version. It will cost me a total of $256.00 to step up. I have 8 days left to get the card to EVGA if I decide to do so.

Monitor (19") is set at 1280x1024 and I play a few games here and there. Newer type games...... NFS MW, Cod2, Fear, Doom3, Guild Wars, BF2.... etc. I like the settings as high as possible.

Questions......

1--- Will I get that big of a boost in gaming by jumping to the 512mb version of the gtx?
2--- Or should I just save the $256.00, wait 'till the next gen of cards, and put that money towards one of them?
3--- Does anyone know what the next gen 7900's will run? (approx price?)
4--- Other possibility?

Thanks

well, you could get the 512mb for $256, and sell it for like $500 or more. maybe even $600. then, you can buy an x1900xtx or 7900gtx. :)

Nope, but I have a pretty good guess - based on the fact that the very fast but not as fast as X1900XT 512GTXs are selling for more than the X1900XT, and the fast but not nearly as fast as the X1900XT 256GTX is selling for almost as much as the X1900XT, I predict that if 7900GTX is equally fast give or take as a X1900XT it will be at least as much $$$, no cheaper. If it is clearly faster it will be priced at $550+ IM(very)HO.

I also think that the odds of nVidia...
1) Making the card be considerabely faster than the X1900XT,
2) Making it available in mass by mid-March, and
3) making it priced competitively
...are VERY low.

This could be a very hard win for Nvidia since the longer the card take to arrive the more the X1900XT will drop in price. I really think this wil be a repeat of X850XT-PE/X850XT vs 6800 Ultra/6800 GT in that most people will agree the ATI product is faster for the money overall, but unlike the X850 generation nVidia fans will not have a feature set arguement in favor of them. So rather than both sets of fanboys buying red or green as it suits them and all others (on the high end) splitting the market between faster X850Xts and almost as fast SM3.0 6800GTs, I think this time pretty much only nVidia fans will pick up a 7900GTX. I really think the X1900s will be too cheap for anything else to happen. I also hope I'm wrong, since that will mean even faster and cheaper cards.

Not to jump into your thread but I have a question...

I just got a 7800GT from Newegg and paid $270 - $20 rebate for it. If I decide to upgrade to the 7900GT in, say, 80 days, how exactly does it work? I send the card to eVGA with my receipt etc and they will give me a $250 credit, or will I get a $399 credit, which is the MSRP? I would then have to pay the difference in MSRP between the 7800GT and 7900GT? Or do I only get $250 back and have to pay the difference between that and the eVGA MSRP? Or do I have it totally wrong?

Again, sorry to jump into your thread but since you're going through it now I thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

If I bought a new Dell 2001FP 20.1, would my 7800gtx/256 manage at the highest settings with 1600x1200 resolution?

Before you say anything....... No widescreen for me. Personal reasons.

No problem......

Example:

I paid $459.00 from New Egg for my 7800gtx/256
If I wanted to upgrade to a 7800gtx/512, I pay the difference between what I paid and what EVGA sell the "upgraded card for" retail

7800gtx/512 = $699.99
my card when purchased 7800gtx/256= $459.00

I pay $240.99 + shipping for the 7800gtx/512

Also remember that EVGA does not count rebates........... It's all "BEFORE" rebates, so the $20.00 is out.

Ahhh, that kinda sucks. You'd probably be better off selling your card and buying the 7800gtx/512m off Newegg or another retailer. eVGA is really making out on that deal...BIGTIME.

Not worth it. Here is why:

You can most likely sell 7800GTX for $350. You were going to pay $250 to step up. $600 will buy you 7900GTX or X1900XTX which will both be faster. Another option would be to hold the 7800GTX and sell it in the fall before G80 and R600 come out.
