I am an a accountant and currently make 38,000 a year. I was fresh out of college when I accepted that job and had 0 experience. Now I have a little over a year experience and have been offered 50,000 from another company. I really like the company I work for, my boss is really cool and basically just leaves me alone to do my job. If I need to take some time off, no problem either. The office is ver lax and I pretty much come and go as a please.

What should I do?

how important to you is money vs a job you like? once you can answer that you can decide if it's worth $12,000 a year to perhaps hate waking up to go to work every morning

I would simply go into your current boss's office and ask him how you have been doing for the past year... Then let him know that while you love working there, you think your salary is too low for your experience and the jbo you are doing and that you've been made another job offer from another company. Let him know tha tyou'd like to continue working there but that the difference in salary will make that very hard to do. Then ask if there's anyway you are elgible for a raise and see what you can work out.

.... you're asking if you should take a job with a jump of $12,000?

Go for it.

Money talks. Having a cool boss doesn't give you the sucess you went to college seeking. Of course your boss is going to be cool to you because he's ripping you off. He's paying you at a wage that rivals the average unskilled factory worker's starting wage.

I'd say $3000 is the minimum it would take to get me from a job I like to a job I dislike. $5000 and it's really not a question.

All of this, of course, assuming the job responsibilities and career path are similar. I mean, if it were a switch between a bikini team oil boy and a ji** mopper, then no amount could change me.

I'm certain his boss will jump at the choice to pay him roughly ten grand more.

Ask for a raise at current job, it's so hard to find a job that's perfect and many times it's a choice of happiness over money and in the end for me at least happiness is more important.

Money isn't everything. I've spent the last 4 years of my life working full time and going to law school at night. After working for a law firm for two years, I'm pretty certain I don't want to be a lawyer and will probably end up back working for the government. Leaving my current job for a government job witll be about a $20k pay cut, but I would have a solid homelife, with 4 weeks vacation, 11 paid holidays, and 2.5 weeks of sick leave each year (whereas with my current job I get no guaranteed vacation, and have to bill 2000 hours per year, which translates into working ~9.5 hours per day, 6 days per week.

That said, if you really like your job, tell the compnay offering you the 50k that you need a few days to think about it, and discuss the offer with your current boss. Chances are he/she will match the offer and you will be golden. I can;t see why they would let you go for a difference of $12k. $50k/year for an accountant is not a lot of money, especially if you have passed the CPA exam.

You get sold too easily. $3000 to switch from a job you like to a job you dislike?

Wow.

Just make the difference on the streets if 3k if going to make THAT much of a monetary difference.

I am not an accountant, but I have many friends/family members who are CPA's and they usually work like dogs...you want a life or money? Talk to your boss about a raise if you like the enviroment of your current company.

I agree with FrankyJunior. The saying goes... 'The grass is always greener on the other side.' But in this case, the grass is just as green on your side too. 12k jump really isn't that much. It depends on where you live/work and what your current lifestyle is like. Although 12k is a decent jump in that industry with no experience, it definitely isn't enough for me to take a job that I might not like. From what i hear, most accounting jobs are the pits. My mother is one and my gf is an accountant/analyst. So don't expect much if you decide to leave.

Yeah, agreed, why would you leave a place of employment that you enjoy just for 3k? Sure, with that extra money you could maybe enjoy your home life more or something, but other than that, your day at work might be miserable. There's nothing wrong with working for the weekend or just time at home to enjoy your hobbies and such, but if you can enjoy the time up till then, why not? 3k is a small price for that, IMO.
