okay, so i'll have around $1000 or so and I have to decide if I should get a rebel XT or save up some more and get a 20D.

btw, i have decided that I am going to switch into advertising photography at RIT.

is there really that much of a difference between the 2 cameras?

thanks doods.

Go to best buy and pick them up and hold them...the size difference is significant. Some people like the heftier feel of the 20D while others like the small size of the rebel XT. another problem with the rebel XT that due to its small size and low weight it will be severely unbalanced when matched with long lenses or heavy primes...

this is just an comment based on size/weight, there are many forums where gearheads rehash this topic all the time on the basis of function and quality...for example check out the canon gear forum on fremiranda.com i think dpreview has a side by side review as well...

Get the Pentax *ist DS for $560 and spend the other $500 on lenses.
The Pentax Limited prime lenses come in mind 🙂

Image quality wise, no difference. 20D has bigger and better build. XT is smaller but plastic. Some bigger lenses will look massive on an XT. I have a black XT and I'm really happy with it.

Black XT here and loving it

Alot of people knock the XT for its size, but IMO it is perfect. Even if your not going to buy retail(which I hope you're not) go into bestbuy and pick both of them up.

If you don't need the FPS or the hi ISO, then go with the XT. Straight from Steves-digicams.com:

Many of the feature advancements and innovations on the EOS Digital Rebel XT digital camera are inherited from its EOS 20D ?prosumer big brother.? Both cameras employ a Canon 8-megapixel, high resolution color CMOS image sensor, and provide the same effective angle of view, equivalent to 1.6 x the normal EF lens focal length. The consumer looking only at the fact that they are both 8-megapixel SLRs might not easily see the real differences between these two cameras. The 20D offers faster continuous shooting (5 frames-per-second (fps) vs. 3 fps) with a larger burst capability (23 frames vs. 14), more custom settings (18 vs. 9) and a rugged magnesium body. The Rebel XT was created for those migrating to digital that don't want to lose the power or flexibility of a SLR system, but can't justify the $600 higher price of the EOS 20D

Definitely get a feel for these cameras before purchasing. Also if you have a good camera store in town, figure out what the largest lens you would like to use with your camera and see how it feels with that on it.

I decided on the 20d because I shoot a lot with large lenses (Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM). Also a lot of the stuff I shoot requires a faster shutter. For me, the difference in the price for what I wanted to do made it better than the Rebel XT.

After you get a feel for them, think about how you are going to use the camera and check out reviews and specifications to see which one works better for what you want to do.
