Ask those who know best . . . for Canon SD400:

Canon

And, for the Sony DSC-W5:

Sony

Personally, I would go with Canon.

Canon all the way I find that my Canon A85, and Canon SD300 produces excellent images and wonderful color. Whereas my parents DSC-W1 produces often washed out images, and the amount of control over exposure settings etc is extremely basic compared to the Canon.

Canon. Canon sensors generally produce less noise per equivalent ISO setting than any Sony counterpart.

Canon Rebel owner here!

After owning and using several Canon's, I would have to be getting one heck of a deal to buy anything else. Buy Canon and you won't regret it.

I actually own the SD400, and do not have a single complaint about it. Though I bought mine in May of 2003, since then it has had some improvements, such as the button placements, and larger LCD, and a share/print button, and 5Mpixels instead of 4. But the Canon interface is extremely intuitive to use. The camera is also very durable. Though, if you are planning on spending on a little bit more, you might consider the Cybershot DSC-T33, or the DSC-T7. These cameras have gorgeous and huge LCD screens. Though wider, they are thinner than the SD400s. A friend of mine purchased the T7 at the end of 2004 and I used it for about a week, and totally fell in love with it. My recommendation is for the SD400 instead of the DSC-W5.
