With the board I either need 3 PCI slots, or 2 PATA connectors. I've narrowed it down to the Asus P5B and P5B-E, P5N-E, Gigabyte GA-965P-S3/DS3, and Biostar TForce965PT. The P5B, P5B-E, and GA-965P-S3/DS3 all use a JMicron IDE controller which I have heard is absolute trash so I'm tossing those out. That leaves the P5N-E and TForce965PT. The former is $140, and the latter is $105. Is the $35 difference worth it to go from Biostar to Asus? I'm looking to do quite a bit of overclocking, so is there any more word how the P5N-E is performing? Last I read that 412.5 MHz limit was removed with a BIOS update. I can basically get a free HSF if I go with the Biostar so that's why I'm really considering it. Any suggestions?

I do not have experience with biostar, although usually I would say get the Asus or Gigabyte just because they are more likely to use higher quality caps and other parts that would translate into better OC's and stability.
I have had very good experience with Gigabyte, and would recommend them to anyone, although I would get the ds3, not the s3.

I would look up as many reviews as I could find on them all anyways.. I'm sure they have their quirks.

Why do you need PATA? have lots of old hard drives? there are sata DVD-RW dives with good specs for 30 bucks on the egg. FYI

There are many Problems with ODD on ICH8R with Plextor Drives as well with others.
Plextor SATA drive + ICH8R and Plextools: Plextools start to freeze
Pioneer and others: Not able to format DVD-RW discs with ICH8R and J-Micron (there are workarounds)
Not able to format Bluray disc with ICH8R and J-Micron (workaround available)
Etc....
Best thing would be to go with a 975 chipset board with native PATA support

Good thought about cap quality and all that, hadn't considered it. Biostar also doesn't even have the board on their site yet, which makes me wary. AT got some great OCing numbers with it, but to me it seems like a high risk board. Asus also has the IDE built into the southbridge which would be very nice. I guess I'll probably just pay the money and go Asus.

I do have a bunch of PATA drives to use. Two HDDs and two optical drives. It'd cost way too much to replace them or get SATA converters.
