Need help deciding on a new video card

I currently have a AMD 7870 and it's run into some issues playing some 4K content back properly/smoothly. Now, with the new NVIDIA GTX 1080/1070 out and AMD releasing RX 480 with other releases in the coming months, I'm not sure whether I should get a new graphics card now or wait...

This is what I'd use it for, in no particular order:

1. 4k gaming (I play mostly multiplayer FPS but am not a hardcore player, just occasionally like to join others for a matchfest now and then; sometimes GTA V or NBA 2k series). I've never tried gaming beyond 60FPS and don't know how much difference that'd make to my experience, nor have I tried gaming on an ultra-wide monitor like the dell u3415w 34" but that should be easier to drive than 4K, so I'm not too worried about it. I'd most likely use one really good, and optimally sized 4K monitor as my primary and maybe have one or two secondary displays. Probably not using eyefinity but would like to keep that option open.

2. VR - I hear it's the next big thing and people who've tried it have been impressed, but some say it's not yet ready for prime time and needs some maturing. I'm interested in getting a good VR experience and trying it out (if it's deemed ready and mature enough for a good VR experience). By good experience, I mean realistic graphics that aren't blocky/pixelated. Which video card would be most competent at delivering the best experience? Do you reach a point where once you pass a certain level of video card the experience will be comparable to the higher-end cards?

3. UHD movie playback

4. video editing of 4K content, down-sampling some to 1080p. Either Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premiere CC.

5. I'm not doing eyefinity in 4K or anything like that and probably won't But I may still wish to be able to drive multiple UHD monitors at once down the road.

My primary monitor right now is a 27" LG 4K IPS with Freesync.

In my case, should I jump in now and get a GTX 1080 or 1070? Or would a Radeon RX 480 do just fine (even for top VR experience)? Or should I wait or the higher end AMD cards to come out?

GTX 1080 if you can afford it. For VR & 4K gaming it's going to be a solid choice. RX 480 just isn't in the right performance class for this.

You can wait for the high end AMD cards if you'd like, but Vega isn't slated until sometime in 2017 and it could be a long wait, especially if Vega isn't out until, say, March of 2017.

Just buy a 1080 now and if AMD puts out something worthwhile and FreeSync is important to you, sell the 1080 and get a Vega.

You are not making it clear if you will purchase a new primary display or not?

If you will buy a new one then I'll buy a 1070 along with a G-Sync 4K screen. If you won't be buying a new screen then I guess get the 8GB RX 480 for now. If you have survived with a 7870 at 4K all this time then I am sure you will be more than fine with a 480 at 4K.

I would not buy the 1080 even for 4K and would instead put the money towards a future upgrade as you will need to do it fairly often at 4K if you would like to maintain a higher standard in gaming. Even at 4K the 1080 is only 20% faster than 1070 so it doesn't really justify the price in my opinion. If you are loaded then by all means go for the 1080 but I doubt someone with a 7870 is.

I like my current LG 4K 27" IPS display with freesync. Don't think I want to go thru the trouble of selling it but could if I saw a good reason to. So that's the reason I'm leaning towards AMD.

Just get the 480 8GB and be ready to shell out more whenever AMD gets back in the high end. You won't be maxing games with a 1080 either. Since you are well aware of the steep requirements for 4K gaming you will be able to reach a happy compromise in most games with a 480 and Freesync will help you with lower fps.

I'm leaning towards the RX 480 with 8GB but the prices are being jacked up all over the place... either that or they're out of stock..

Ya it's a terrible situation, just wait for the market to stabilize a bit.

Prices are jacked up due the Ethereum mining. If you mine, then you can consider picking up a RX 480 for a jacked up price. But it is literally the bare minimum for VR.

I think atm, the sweet spot (without mining) is the GTX 1060 6GB. They've actually come down in price to around $260 for low-end AIB's (I've been trolling Newegg and they're now more frequently in stock). If GTX 1070 could actually be bought for its intended price of $380, I'd give that a nod. But frankly, you're going to be paying low $400s for one atm.

In all, like Thinker_145 said, this is just a terrible situation. Personally, I'm waiting for Ethereum to crash and looking to pick up a HTPC and SFF gaming card for cheap.

1060 could be hindered by its 6GB of vRAM sooner rather than later. Mankind Divided uses over 6GB vRAM on my 1070.

1060 over 480 makes absolutely no sense for someone with a freesync monitor anyway.
