I am currently running a Compaq Presario SR 1538x with an AMD Athlon 64 3300+.

I am a supervisor at OfficeMax and am able to get these components for around $220 from intel

- Intel Core 2 duo E6300 Processor
- Intel® Desktop Board DG965WH
- Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.

My question is, would I notice a large performance increase if I went with the Intel dual core processor, or would it be close to the same, and just sell the processor and mobo and go with my current system.

I do not have my system overclocked, and I don't plan on doing it. I am running at 2.41 GHZ right now.

Thanks for the advice

You won't see much difference if any when running single threaded apps, but you will see a big improvement in multitasking abilities and multi threaded apps like video encoding.

But upgrading will require new DDR2 ram, and depending on the Compaq it may also require a new power supply and case (many OEM boxes are not standard ATX cases, and have proprietary PS's)

If you decide to go conroe, I would sell your current box complete and build a new one from scratch

It really depends on what you use your PC for mainly. Do you do a lot of multi-tasking? If so, it'll be a big improvement.
