Hey all. I am in need of a new car. I don't want to purchase new since I drive about 1 mile to work and only really drive around town on my days off. The farthest drive I do when I go out with the fiance is usually downtown (25 miles away), but that's not very often. We usually do things local. In about a year we will be buying my fiance a new car (probably an IS250) so I really only wanted to spend about 10k when searching for a car. Now for the choices....

I have 2 friends who say they have cars for me. The first one has a 2005 Mustang V6, auto trans, 65k miles on it. It's got a clean carfax, and he has the service records for it. He did admit that he drove it hard when he first purchased it but he hasn't really abused it and only daily drives it to work now since he is bored of the car and he wants a new one. He stated that the only issue the car has is that the gas gauge is stuck on "E", but the low fuel light works. I searched on the issue and it seems to be a very common issue with the 2005-2008 Mustangs, and is around a $300 fix. He gave me a price of $7,500.

The second car is a friend from work who stated that he has a very old (76 year old) relative who is selling his car. He purchased it new and has had it since. It's a 2002 Cadillac Eldorado ETC. The car is very clean, and has brand new tires on it. The best part is that the car only has 40k miles on it. He stated he was going to try and sell it for $11,000 but he offered me the car for $8,000.

I don't know much about the Cadillac or even how the newer body style Mustangs are in terms of reliability.

Let me know what you think!

Caddy no question!

That is not taking into account reliability, which i have no idea about.

Never buy cars from friends unless you are prepared to deal with the problems yourself. Just because its a friend doesn't mean it isn't some piece of crap. Do your own homework and find something that works for you.

In many cases cars owned by senior citizens have been meticulous dealer maintained. See if they've got service records, but that seems like the way to go to me.

Between those two I would rock the caddy.

That being said, for $10k you can probably find something better.

And +1 on buying cars from friends. When I was younger I saw at least one friendship flat out ruined over something like this... Friend sold a friend the car, trans randomly died a few days later.

Caddy's of that vintage have an issue with the engine block cracking. I don't know the details, but you should check around some Caddy-specific forums to be sure.

I would personally go with the Mustang. The V8 caddy is never going to warm up, it will be very sad.

For a 1 mile commute I'd try and get by without a car. Bike/walk/scooter Use a zipcar or rental when you need to go farther.

I wish I could do without a car but I have items I take with me in a large bag to work. Also it rains a lot and snows out here too much. I was thinking something cheaper but most of my cheaper options are very high mileage.

I would buy neither of those. I think that Mustang is overpriced and your friend is lame for buying an automatic Mustang.

Those Cadillacs are complex and crappy cars, from before GM realized that a V8 FWD car is stupid

What is high mileage? My newest beater has 218k miles on it a, bought at 215k miles. Miles on most car really aren't that big of a deal anymore. Not like you need insane reliability when you are only 1 mile from work.

Well I went to call to test drive the eldorado and my decision was made for me, it was sold :(. I ended up picking up the Mustang for 6k, which seems like a great deal to me. I hope this thing doesnt break on me next week :x My friend gave me every service receipt from when he purchased the car. I know any problem that happens from today is my problem though and I wont bother him with it. This is my first mustang, fun little car, good power for a v6. I'll post pics later!

Yes that's a good price for a very modern and safe car. I'm amazed how solid my Mustang feels vs all the 90s cars I've owned. The V6 isn't bad IMO with over 200hp

It was just under 7 seconds to 60 with the 5A trans in the C&D test.

Try Techron Concentrate in the fuel tank for couple of tanks, this might fix it up
