I found a really cool old Bell telephone from the 70's in my parents' garage today. It had one of those funky 4-prong connectors, so I figured I'd buy a crimper to convert it to the standard phone jack size.

Only problem is, I can't get all three wires to stay in place so I can crimp the damn thing. Are there any hints for getting this to work right? The closest thing I've used to a crimper was a punchdown tool.. never messed with one of these before. Please help, this is driving me nuts!

Get a new modular cord with a modular plug at one end and lugs at the other end which will fit the connectors inside the phone.

In my area I would go to Radio Shack.

LOL! The first few times, it's kinda awkward. You're not sure quite how much to strip, then when you get to the point of insertion, you often fumble about trying to get things in the right slot. The worst is when it gets all bendy and you just can't get it in. But given time and practice you'll get the hang of it. Pretty soon, you'll be crimping like a pro.

Dunno if I described my situation adequately.. the phone itself has a built in cord which can't be replaced. So I stripped off the ends to connect it.. any pointers?

For real now. The way I do it is after you've stripped the sheathing back to see the individual wires, fan them out in the color grouping you need. Then just firmly hold them in that flattened shape and shove them in. I'm assuming you're using RJ11, so there won't be any concern with skipping slots, just get one wire per slot and you'll be good. Of course, they have to be the right wires.

I may have joked above, but the gist of it was true. It just takes practice.
