need help convert dvd direct to avi

Is there any good free (if not then I am willing to pay) for good software that converts a movie dvd (store bought like Scarface or etc) directly to a .avi file?

I have tried tons of software like dvd2avi and things like that but 99% of them just crash and do not work.

Basically, what I am looking to do is take a movie off a dvd, convert it to avi so I can put in on my cowon a2 (PMP).

Please help.

The free (light) version of FairUse is severely limited... I'd try and find the older versions if possible. 😉

dont use the light version, either pay or find an older version.

auto gordianknot is great, and very easy to use (free). But i recall, you have to rip the dvd to harddrive first using dvd decryptor or dvd fab decrypter. maybe if you use on-the-fly decryption programs like anyDVD (payware) or dvd43 (freeware) you don't have to rip.
