Need help connecting x800 to HDTV

Hello everyone, I am trying to hook up my x800 card to my panasonic HDTV. It is 1080p so has a max resolution of 1920x1080. I am using a DVI -> HDMI cable, no adapter.

I have hooked up my macbook pro the display, and got full 1920x1080 resolution so I know the TV supports it.

Now when I use the x800 I have a very hard time even getting it to show up on the TV. If I connect it just using DVI port to HDMI I get no signal. If I hook up a VGA monitor and then use dual monitor mode and switch the resolution on the TV to a lower one then I can see it.

I have to have a resolution of 1280x720 on the TV or else I do not get any picture.

I contacted ATI support, and I got nowhere, I basically got the answer "its a hardware limitation, get a new video card"

I still think there is something I can do, any suggestions?

I think ATI was right, because HDMI has some sort of DRM embedded in it, so those old cards aren't likely to work even though they can output at that resolution. It has to be encoded properly for the HDMI tv to display it (the way I understand it).
