Hey guys I need some help since I got a new display. My old setup used to work like this
Xbox 360 --> Adapter ---> 1) Optical ---> Receiver
2) Analog HD ---> Display

I would like to use the HDMI. Thing is the adapter covers both the hdmi plug and if I use the hdmi I don't have a separate optical cable slot. What am I supposed to do? Thanks!

if you use hdmi from xbox, you don't need the optical cable, the hdmi will carry the audio signal (and the video signal) to the receiver.

For my PS3, I run the HDMI directly to the TV and then optical to the receiver for 5.1 as my receiver also does not have HDMI

The ps3 can output the audio over both of them at the same time so I dont have to fiddle with settings.

then you cannot use hdmi. not that it offers any advantages to you anyway.

unless your tv offers an digital audio pass-through.

My TV does have optical out, but it wont pass through 5.1 from the PS3's HDMI back to the receiver over optical. It downmixes everything it gets on HDMI into stereo. Which is fine because I dont always want to use the surround sound.

Though I do have the TV, PS3 and PC all going through optical to the receiver and using one of these:

Try running component HD to your new TV and compare that to HDMI (with no sound of course for now) and just compare the image and decide if its worth it to order a special cable that will have both optical and HDMI for the xbox.

It's a connector issue artificially created by MS to make you pay more for their cable.

you can also rip the grey jacket off the 360 adapter allowing for both the HDMI and adapter to fit. I did this for some time when I had a projector that didn't have audio but would use HDMI.
