Need help configuring Router with pre-existing modem

I have been using a Dsl modem (Zyxel 623-41) for the past few years. I recently bought a Linksys (wrt54gx2). I followed instructions and with my current configuration the router is receiving the internet signal as if it were a computer, with the internal ip of (10.0.0.1).

My limited understanding of networking is telling me that the modem is routing the signal, therefore the router is receiving it through a internal ip, then it is routing it again. Therefore this causes high latenency and bad connections in all the devices that are connected to my router.

How can I make the modem send the full internet signal into the router therefore enable the router to do its job correctly?

Your Modem is actually a combo Modem Router.

As a result, its output is Local IP (and the choice was to use the private band of 10.0.0.x), therefore, the Linksys? WAN port has an Internal IP address.

That does not impede the Linksys functions; however, it creates double Routing, which is a Bad idea.

So connect the Linksys as describe here, http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

If you do not like the 10.0.0.1 range then you need the change the Zyxel 623-41 core IP and DHCP range (if possible) to 192.168.x.x

I have tried everything, still I can?t get the modem/router to connect directly (Without its own internet routing and networking) to the new router.

Last case scenario, can I forward all ports to my new router and technically bypass the other network? There are many setting I can use ( NAPT Rule, RDR Rule, Basic Rule, Filter Rule, Bimap Rule, Pass Rule) which one will you recommend.

Another thing, there is an option in my modem/router that lets me turn of the Nat is that useful in any way.

thanks in advance

Try it Turn off NAT might set he device to work as a Modem only.

If it works as a modem only you can use the Linksys as the main Router and all Ports manipulation would be done in the Linksys.

There is No standart to Router menu naming read carefully the Zyxel 623-41 manual since you would need to set evrey thing on it.

In conclusion if I do foward all ports to my router through the modem/router -> router network. Will that esentially factor out the dual routing problem?

Nope, that would deal with dual port opening but Not with Double Routing.

Open ports is Not your problem on the second Router since iy is easy to open ports on the LLinksys, but the Zyxel 623-41 might be a problem.

If you open all the ports and the Zyxel 623-41 is only conneted to the Linksys WAN port you would Not need any more to open ports on the Zyxel 623-41, but you still would have double Routing.

It might work, but Very Good it ain't going to be.
