Hi All:

I'd very much appreciate any help I can get with this question: I just replaced my A64 3200+ with an FX-55 San Diego 2.6GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor. My mobo is an MSI Neo2 K8n Platinum. I dropped in the new processor, and all is well, except my 3D Mark 06 Score is 2234--Less than my 3200+! I'm sure I do not have something set right (memory?); can anyone tell what I am doing wrong?

Additionally, what is the correct AGP aperature size for my card? I have a eVGA GeForce 6800 GT AGP 256MB card.

Here is how the board is set up:

Memory Specs: Kingston

  • Tech Spec Capacity 512MB Speed DDR 266 (PC 2100) Cas Latency 2.5 Voltage 2.5V
Clock Cycle Time (tCK) 7.5ns (min.) / 15ns (max.)
Row Cycle Time (tRC) 65ns (min.)
Refresh Row Cycle Time (tRFC) 75ns (min.)
Row Active Time (tRAS) 45ns (min.) / 12,000ns (max.)

In CoreCell:

  • Current CPU Clock: 2613
    Current DDR Clock: 133

  • DRAM Configuration-> Timing Mode: Manual
X Memclock Index Value (Mhz): 133Mhz
    X CAS# Latency (Tcl): 2.5
X Min RAS# active time (Tras): Auto
    X RAS# to CAS# delay (Trcd): Auto
X Row Precharge Time (Trp): Auto
    Bottom of 32-Bit [31:24] IO: E0
    1T/2T Memory time: 2T
    S/W Memory Hole Remapping: Disabled
    H/W Memory Hole Remapping: Disabled
  • High Performance Mode: Manual
    Aggressive Timing: Disabled
    Dynamic Overclocking: Disabled
    Clock Spread Spectrum: Disabled
    HT Frequency: 5x
    Cool 'n' Quiet: Auto
    Adjust CPU Ratio: x13
    Adjust CPU FSB Frequency: 200
    Adjust AGP Frequency: 66
    Adjust CPU VID: StartUp
    CPU Voltage: By CPU VID
    Memory Voltage: 2.5V
    AGP Voltage: 1.50 V

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Thank You,

AGP aperture size is usually more of a function of how much SYSTEM MEMORY or Ram you have....Take total system ram and set aperture to 1/2 of that....

Now remember that 3dmark06 is a gpu intensive app so even if things were all done right you likely would not have seen a huge difference with sme video card...

pC2100 is really hog tieing this system...need PC3200 but that is beside the fact...

1) YOU COULD TRY REFLASHING THE MOBO TO A NEWER BIOS...MAYBE NEED A NEWER BIOS. L2 CACHE RECOGNIZING ISSUES PERHAPS

2) YOU COULD TRY A REFORMAT OF THE SYSTEM (though I dont think this is it)

3) IS THE SYSTEM STABLE?

4) SET RAM TO AUTO TIMINGS

5) DISABLE COOL N QUIET FOR THE MOMENT

Thank you for the help! I will look into the new memory, but in the meantime, what kind of performance gains can I expect?

I am running the latest BIOS for my board, and the system is stable--no overclocking. With RAM timings on auto, the score drops even more, and I will disable Cool N' Quirt.

How can I check to ensure that L2 cache is being recognized correctly?

Best Regards,

You could use memtest and see if it sees all 1mb of L2 cache....L2 cache should have helped you a bit but like I said 3dmark06 is more gpu intensive so it would not have seen a huge differnce and nothing near the 30% speed increase you gave it in clock....

have you tried other benchmarks to make sure whole system is up to snuff....good testers of cpu stuff that generally go linear....you are right to look at the memory subsystem cause it will play more of a factor in the 3dmark06 scores then cpu...

How many sticks do you have of ram??? Are you running it in dual channel mode? this will make a nice difference...They would need to occupy dimm slots 1-3 or 2-4 to be in dual channel mode. I ask cause sometimes ppl will remove their ram sticks to install a cpu with certain heatsink coolers to give more room to get hands in there.
