Dell 400SC specs

P4-2.8GHz w/ 800MHz FSB
512MB DDR 400MHz
40GB
Onboard 1000Mbps NIC, No OS, Floppy Drive, ATI Rage XL Video
8x AGP, 4 PCI slots, 6 x USB 2.0, 1 parallel, 2 serial, 2 PS/2

I got it for around 300 dollars AR and I was wondering what I could do to modify my computer to run games like doom3 and the upcomming HL2 / CS:source smoothly.

I know that the CPU cant be OC'ed but do you think this spec is good enough for future mods?

Im definately going to get a New Vid Card (9800 pro or 6600 GT) and also upgrade ram to 1 Gig of DDR 400mhz Dual Channel ECC.

do you guys think these two changes alone should make this dell into an excellent budget gaming computer? Opinions are welcome, thank you.

ATI rage graphics are a couple of years old now....get yourself a decent (read better) graphics card and you should be laughing! the rest of the specs are OK

Anything from an 9600XT or FX5900 upwards should run Doom3 comfortably.....I know other cards can run it such as the Ti4200 but he/she said "smoothly"

sell your 512 mb ecc and get non ecc cause ur not gonna use it as a server anyways. get a dual channel kit. it should be pretty close to ecc (if you have a frys nearby) in price.

get a 9800 pro or 6600 gt (dunno, but i think the nvidia one is better)

dont change anything other than those 2 things. you are set.

the computer is pretty good and considering that these are prescott processors you would probably not get much of a overclock anyways.

and ignore the dell bashing. the dell 400sc processors are probably the best price/value ration right now considering how well they are built
