Call #2. I told him what I did with tech 1, he said if I dont see anything related to usb orinoco under the interrup requests, then winxp isnt allowing enough resources to it and thats why its dieing
Sounds like the same kind of bs. I've called several times now and everyone has a different answer to my problem, yet nobody fixes it. The last tech I talked to told me that my SiS chipset for the onboard USB controllers had issues with XP. He told me to go to the SiS website and download the patch. I did and I still have the same problem. I'm going to go one step further now and go buy a pci USB card to plug in and try it that way.
I went ahead and moved a pc temporarily into the basement room where I want to use the wireless connection. I connected both the Orinoco and Linksys USB wireless clients to the Windows 98SE machine to test range. Both work very well, but the Orinoco has a little better range. The thing is that the Linksys WUSB11 is tiny and has a long USB cable, so I can just about hang it from the ceiling and that more than makes up for the range differences.
This leads me to another question. Can you replace the stock USB cable with the Orinoco with a longer one, so you can position the USB client better?
I also wanted to mention that Windows XP's networking is a big piece of dog doo! I set these clients up on two machines with Windows 98. I had to click a few more buttons and enter a few things, but it was a snap to set up and it works flawlessly. XP is a joke when it comes to configuring this stuff. I'm almost tempted to ditch it just because of this.
As far as getting an answer from the newsgroups, I haven't received a reply yet. Guess my problem is either too mundane or nobody has the answer for us.
As far as the DLink card from Tiger Direct goes. I would never buy a wireless product from a place like that unless I tested the device first. Tiger Direct is probably all right if you don't have to return the product for some reason. Go buy it and try it at Circuit City and if it doesn't work, take it back. It's worth a few extra bucks for that piece of mind to me. Sorry to have mentioned this JackMDS. I always hate to bite the hand that feeds me.
