Ok.. I found out the problem with the Orinoco USB Client. It's Windows XP Pro. I have it hooked up to a Windows 98 machine right now and it works perfectly. What a bunch of crap if you ask me. I'm certainly calling Orinoco back on this one. What do I have to do? Run my wireless network in Windows 98?

My Linksys WUSB11 wireless USB client works in XP until I enable any kind of encryption. The signal is still ok (drops a little) with with 64 bit encryption, but the pages barely load in IE.

so you know for sure its winxp screwing your gold client

Im in a VERY similar situation as you were, I have the Wap11 4 feet from my dads wINXP computer with the usb gold client. I upgraded the drivers and it didnt help
what happens for me is that it finds the wireless network, shows the green full meter, then greys out, then green again.
Like if someones pulling out the usb cable from the gold client in and out real fast, almost like on off type thing. then after a 1minute the connection just dies
unfortunately i only have 2 computers with winxp pro
=(

That's exactly the problem that I'm having. I just talked to another tech at Orinoco/Proxim and we went through everything. He told me that he's heard of the problem, but didn't have a fix for me. He then gave me a newsgroup to checkout (alt.internet.wireless) and I just posted a question there about this very same issue.

BTW.. I was just reading the reviews on the Orinico USB Gold Client at Practically Networked and someone else gave the Orinoco a bad review because he couldn't get it to work in XP Pro. His symptoms mirror both of ours.

I'm very happy with the Orinoco USB Gold Client on my Windows 98 machine. I'm using it right now and it's just as fast as a "wired" connection. I just disabled the PCI NIC and I'm surfing wireless right now. I'm going to try enabling WEP with it and see what happens.

I'll post my findings if I come up with someone from the newsgroup.

I bough the Orinoco when it was Lucent ?Avaya, then it moved to Agere, and now Proxim. I am afraid that it fell between the cracks for a while, thus the drivers problem.

The Card works in many cases on WinXP with the drivers mentioned in TallGeese post (12- or 13 from the top).

In the interim, there currently a good deal on the D-Link DWL-120. I use it as a "spare of the moment" In case I need to content a computer to the Wireless network. he distance is slightly less then the Orinoco.

The good news is rebate this month, so the thingie poes for $35 after MIR.

Review here: D-Link USB Wireless Adapter.

Drivers if needed here.

Sold here: D-Link USB Wireless Network Adapter (802.11b Compliant).

This is not fancy stuff, just a good card for the money.

alright this is what the tech as told me so far.

First call. He told me to look under the irq interruptions in the device mananger
I had a thing called ali pci to usb open host controller which was sharing the same IRQ as my nvidia card.
he said thats probably the problem because the vcard is hogging all the resources for that irc or whatever.
he said I should go into the bios but he cannot assist me because they aren't allowed to lead us into that. -understandable
I messed around in the bios and was able to change the irq's the usb one used irq5 and the nvidia used irq11.

SAME PROBLEM.. connection is strong for 2min, then dies.

Call #2. I told him what I did with tech 1, he said if I dont see anything related to usb orinoco under the interrup requests, then winxp isnt allowing enough resources to it and thats why its dieing
he couldnt go into fixing that either but he asked for my email to email me a whitepaper on fixing resource issues with winxp.

hmm

=\

Sounds like the same kind of bs. I've called several times now and everyone has a different answer to my problem, yet nobody fixes it. The last tech I talked to told me that my SiS chipset for the onboard USB controllers had issues with XP. He told me to go to the SiS website and download the patch. I did and I still have the same problem. I'm going to go one step further now and go buy a pci USB card to plug in and try it that way.

I went ahead and moved a pc temporarily into the basement room where I want to use the wireless connection. I connected both the Orinoco and Linksys USB wireless clients to the Windows 98SE machine to test range. Both work very well, but the Orinoco has a little better range. The thing is that the Linksys WUSB11 is tiny and has a long USB cable, so I can just about hang it from the ceiling and that more than makes up for the range differences.

This leads me to another question. Can you replace the stock USB cable with the Orinoco with a longer one, so you can position the USB client better?

I also wanted to mention that Windows XP's networking is a big piece of dog doo! I set these clients up on two machines with Windows 98. I had to click a few more buttons and enter a few things, but it was a snap to set up and it works flawlessly. XP is a joke when it comes to configuring this stuff. I'm almost tempted to ditch it just because of this.

As far as getting an answer from the newsgroups, I haven't received a reply yet. Guess my problem is either too mundane or nobody has the answer for us.

As far as the DLink card from Tiger Direct goes. I would never buy a wireless product from a place like that unless I tested the device first. Tiger Direct is probably all right if you don't have to return the product for some reason. Go buy it and try it at Circuit City and if it doesn't work, take it back. It's worth a few extra bucks for that piece of mind to me. Sorry to have mentioned this JackMDS. I always hate to bite the hand that feeds me. ;)

so I guess its a no go with the gold client and XP
I keep seeing people having problems with this setup, yet I haven't found the fix for it yet. I've got other fish to fry right now, so I've personally given up on the Orinoco card for my purposes. I'm going to return mine because I can get it for the price that I paid any day of the week.

Sorry. If I stumble across something, I'll definitely pass it along though.

hey you said it works flawlessy in win98 correct?
What about in win2k? If it works fine I'll put it on the computer that needs the gold client.
