need help computer wont boot... :(

Hey guys, I had a problem with a certain computer awhile back where there was a problem with either the CPU socket or CPU itself. Anyway I RMA'ed the board to ASUS, and instead of repairing it they replaced it(different serial# on the board).

Anyway so I as I'm putting together this board I used the same CPU that was questionable whether it was still alive from the last incident. I replaced the HSF with a zalman one that was a little bit too big where on one side, one of the capacitors surronding the socket is bent. But not seriously bent, but noticeable. I hope this isn't a problem?

So I installed 2 sticks of memory in the 1st slot and 2nd slot desginated by the manual of the board.

Then I plugged in a video card... connected the ATX power supply connecter to the motherboard and also to the ATX12V1.

I turned on the switch for the computer and the motherboard light goes on, the case power LED goes on. I press the power switch on the case, nothing... No fans, no beeps, no display.

Things I've tried so far...
Different power supply plug
Checking the power switch pin, flipping it different ways
Cutting the memory sticks down to 1, tested both sticks on the memory slot 1...
Removing all memory sticks and video card, just cpu and motherboard
Checking and clearing the CMOS Jumper...

Tried a different power supply... Funny thing though on this other power supply only my motherboard light went on not my case light, but either way it still wouldn't boot the computer

All this and still no fans will turn on, no beeps.
The farthest I've gotten is the lights going on.
Now I'm kind of certain it's not my power supply... the motherboard just got replaced, but maybe they sent me a dead one? But why would the motherboard lights go on? And I was told even my CPU is dead, fans would still move and beeps would sound...

So I am stumped guys, I really need some help!

Dead CPU's can do wierd things. Have you tried directly connecting the two power pins with a screwdriver head? (its not really dangerous)...your problem really sounds like a dead cpu though..ive had 1-2 dead durons exhibit the same behavior

I've tried removing everything... leaving just the motherboard and PSU... The PSU fan still does not start spinning... So I am not sure about the CPU I think its the motherboard..

It could also be a short with the motherboard and case. Have the motherboard outside of the case with the processor/heatsink/fan, memory, and video card installed. Hook the power supply up and try starting the computer up by using a flathead screwdriver to simply make contact with the two pins on the motherboard that say power on or whatever. What power supplies have you tried using?

I'd do what AMDskip suggested.

Sounds like its either the board being shorted inside the case,or its the PowerSwitch/wire acting up.

Pull the board out of the case like mentioned above and place it on an AntiStatic bag, then use a flathead Screwdriver to actually jump the Power Switch pins on the board to see if it will power up.

I doubt it is the CPU causing it to not power up.
But anything is possible i guess.

Also, don't hookup any IDE cables/Drives up to the board while testing.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies guys
I did what you guys told me, I even tried another PSU/Power switch led on another working computer of mine... still no luck...

Anyway I took it out of the case, placed it on a bag, and with just my motherboard.. I didn't install anything.. And I tried a dime and just to be sure also a phillipshead screw driver...
Same results.. The PSU fan doesnt go off... just the motherboard lights go on...

Just been reading about your problem, and it is exactly the same as what i am experiencing at the moment...

Light on motherboard comes on, but nothing powers up, i have swapped everything for known parts apart from the CPU and it still doesnt boot up...strange as i thought that a PC still booted up without a CPU in but just beeped at you like mad!!!

I have a CPU on its way and am hoping that it will boot straight away as that is the only thing that hasnt been changed!

Good luck!
