Hi,

I am having trouble diagnosing an issue that I am currently having with my PC. Hopefully you guys can help!!!

I have a Dell Inspiron 3847 Desktop i5 3.2GHz 12GB 1TB computer that I have had for seven months. As soon as I got it, I changed out the power supply to an xfx 550 and install an ssd drive.

About two weeks ago, the computer would randomly shutdown and the fans would max out with the power light turning to amber. This would continue until I powered the computer down. I can not restart the machine for ten-fifteen minutes.

The shutdown occurs after 3-4 hours of use. It does not seem to matter what I am doing. I have run Open hardware monitor and I do not see any thing that appears out of tolerance. The core does appear to run hot 40-60C but not excessive.

I have had the motherboard replaced as well as the heatsink and fans. The Bios was reset back to the default settings and I have returned to booting up off of the hd again and yet the shutdowns continue. I had not overclocked any settings.

I am at a loss of what to do next? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks,
J

When a computer shuts down spontaneously, that just screams bad power supply or bad motherboard to me. Since you've replaced the motherboard, I'd say you might need to consider an RMA of the power supply next as it is possible you just had the bad luck to get a defective one out of the box.

SSDs under load tend to get warm, so it is possible for a defective SSD to significantly overheat and shut off. You might try downloading a bootable Linux distro, burn it to a CD or flash drive, then disconnect the SSD and then see if it still shuts down when running without the SSD.

What model of SSD do you have, and how old is it? Is your SSD updated to the most recent available firmware?

If you put the stock power supply back in, do you still encounter this problem?
