So I ripped the Matrix from my DVD collection, chopped off the unnecessary intro and ending credits and Divx it using Virtual Dub. I used the 4.11 codec @ 250kbps. For audio I set it as mp3 32bit mono 22kHz. Everything else is default and the resulting file is 270mb which is still TOO big to fit on a 256mb CF card. Is there anyway I can make the file at least 40mb smaller? The resolution is at 300x200ish and the next logical thing to do is to lower the resolution but I don't see an option for that in VirtualDub.

Well I'm testing out the Pocket Divx player for the IPAQ so I pretty much need it in Divx format.

Resolution doesn't matter for the file size, only bitrate. (of course you don't want to use HDTV res with that low bitrate:D)

but man, can't you get a larger CF card? 250kbps with 22KHz mono 32kbps audio must be horrible...

edit-- I just tried encoding a vid with those settings, and it's actually not that bad... DivX is amazing. :)

well i haven't tested the quality because i cant fit it on the CF to playback on the ipaq. but i don't expect the greatest quality. as long as there isn't a bunch of blob people walking around on screen then i'm happy. and audio wise, even below telephone quality is fine too as long as I can hear the words.

yeah i can buy a bigger CF card but that would be the expensive solution :) plus i'm just playing around with it. i don't want to shell out another 200-300.

Well, sometimes resolution CAN matter. Divx is very weird in that sometimes it'll still take up more space at the same bitrate with higher res, although it's usually on the much higher ones... to answer your question, click to add a filter, and then resize, and it'll let you select a new resolution, just be sure to keep in in ratio with what you've got.

well lower the bitrate and 2 pass encode it:p might help quality with superlow bitrate, i'm not sure but probably. movies 136 min, 230kbs should make it fit. maybe 215 for safety.. don't those cf cards have some overhead for the filesystem? you gotta be careful with that:p as for 32kbs audio.. that should be fine for mono. and unless its too much trouble, just totally reencode the vid, esp if you want to do two pass:p reencoding 250 to 215 probably make it look like crap.

ah just tried the resizing thing. so far it seems like the file is gonna stay around 200 megs but it's fluctuating as the encoding is going on. i'll know if it works in another hr or so :) thanks a lot everyone.
