Ahhhrrrgghh...darn it, I still can't get this network to work. I purchased the cross-over cable, bought two pci nics, but when I click on network neighborhood and "browse network" I still get the message unable to browse network.

Is there anything I'm missing?

under TCP/IP->D-link DFE-530TX PCI fast ethernet adapter
I've set the IP address to
192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 for both PC

what can I be missing here? Still can't browse my network neighborhood or can only see my own computer after awhile, somebody please help.

Network Neighborhood not browsing does not mean your network is not working. Far from it. If you can ping then you should be able to use the Find computer option to find the other PC. Sounds like you might not have anything shared but if you do, just use find and map a drive or whatever your aim is. One thing you can also do is turn Master browser off on one of the PC's. That might fix your NN issue although using Network Neighborhood to test connectivity is not what it is for.

Edit. Creating a host file might also solve the browsing issue.

I have sort of the same problem. How do I ping the other computer, map a drive, and create a host file? The problem I have is windows 95 machine. My windows 98 machine can see the windows 95 machine within seconds, but the windows 95 machine timeouted on the search for the windows 98 machine. Thanks!
