I don't believe this is a repost. The other post was related to finding 350W (or better) psus without on/off switches. In the process, I found some online citations that a standard ATX psu could not be used in Dells after 1998 (which would include the GX240). The board would get fried according to the articles I found.

This know-it-all at the Dell forums keeps saying that the articles I found are all wrong but isn't really backing up his position with anything that I feel comfortable with.

So what i'de like to do is compare the wirings between the standard ATX psu and the original (or OEM replacement) Dell psu.

Here's the link to Dell forums conversation:

Here's the link to the standard ATX design:

I'm not sure how to get the specs for the GX240.

Any help would be appreciated.

AFAIK all Dells that use non-standard supplies have an additional connector next to the main 20-pin power connector. Dell's drawings don't show such a connector. I would love to have confirmation that this is a reliable test.

By the way, I don't know if it matters but I have the tower version. Hence the applicability of the articles I found.

There's some nice pictures in one of the articles I found:

Also, here are some sites that have various specs for OEM psu replacements for the GX240
