Need help comparing a 9600 PRO to a FX 5500

Hello guys,

I'm selling my 9600 PRO(GeCube 9600 PRO 128 Mb) 'cause I got a 9800 PRO, a potential buyer is asking me how this card compares with his current Geforce FX 5500 256 Mb.

He owns an Athlon XP 2200+ with 512 Mb ram and he wants to know if upgrading to a 9600 PRO will be worth it for him or he will still be limited by his CPU. He says that he tried playing Doom3 with the FX 5500 and it didn't cut it, not even at 800x600.

I suppose that with DX8 and DX9 games (like HL2) he could expect an improvement of around 35%, but I'm not sure with an OpenGL game like Doom3 since I don't own it, although I've read that ATI card's are not a "star" with Doom3. Also I don't have a clue about his processor since my rig is an A64 2800+.

Any advice or opinions will be welcome.

Cheers.

Im sure that with your 9600 pro doom3 would be playable at 800x600 at the medium qaulity, when I was using a 9600xt 128 meg card I was able play at 1024x768 medium most of the time with a lil oc'ing. Also there are a lot of little studders in the newer games that people think are cause of their video card that actually arent. with games like doom3 and halflife 2 you would be amazed at the level of performance increase when using a gig of memory. Until December I was using my xp 2700@ 2300mhz, 512 ram, 9600xt. Then I switched to 9800 pro and there was an increase in performance but substancially less than what I was hoping for. Then I bought one more 512 stick of ram, Holy crap is all I can say. Also keep in mind that a good defrag helps things out too. All of this information Will help you tell him whether Doom 3 will be playable on his system.
Cheers
