Need help choosing Lenovo or Mac . . . .

I am deciding between Lenovo Y470 and MacBook Pro - I don't know which is faster, better. I know the mac won't get viruses , but from what I've read online the mac isn't as reliable these days. http://hothardware.com/News/ASUS-More-Reliable-Than-Apple-But-Lenovo-Bests-Them-All-/
I like the Lenovo bcuz of its capability of having both the SSD and the SATTA drives together at same time! making it faster (if I understand that correctly.) But I've always heard that macs are best. Well here's the spec's maybe someone can help me understand better . . .

13 inch MacBook Pro

  • 2.8GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7
  • 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x4GB
  • 512GB Solid State Drive
  • SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Backlit Keyboard
versus

Lenovo IdeaPad Y470:
-2nd Gen Core i7, Intel i7-2670QM / 2.2 GHz ( 3.1 GHz ) 6MB, L3 Cache (Quad-Core ), DOS
-8 GB DDR3 SDRAM ,
-SATA HDD 750 GB - Serial ATA-300 - 540 Layer0 rpm,
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M DDR3 2 GB
- Dual layer multiburner Drive (DVD-RW)
-14.1 WXGA LED, Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition,
-Camera Built-in 2.0MP
- 4.9 lbs.

in order to compete with this do I have to go to the Mac with these specs . . .

  • 2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
  • 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x4GB
  • 512GB Solid State Drive
  • SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
  • Backlit Keyboard
thx for any input!

Basically you have apples and oranges - two very different operating systems. MacBook Pro is a top of the line machine. The Ideapad is Lenovo's second tier below Thinkpads. If you are not a long time Windows user, the MacBook Pro might be your best choice.

BTW, if your quotes are correct, and the prices are similar, the MacBook Pro with a 550GB SSD is a no brainer!

Putting OS aside, can the first mac on the list compete in speed with the Lenovo? and if not by how much would I be sacrificing for a mac?

Just to be clear, the ram in the 2nd system isn't possible lol. It says and I quote.

"-8 GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 X 4096),"

You must have forgot the other 1x4096 gb stick because thats only 1 4gb stick, thats not 8gb's lol.

And just to be clear, don't buy the mac. Also if you want a good system, don't buy either of those and I / We can help you get a much better system for your money 😉

Haha a mac wont get viruses. For one thing, that is just flatly not true. And for another thing, apple is the biggest malware provider in the world. Its systems come with viruses installed at the factory.

well first of that "reliability survey" is completely useless, so don't put anything into it.

as far as the MBP goes then don't get the ram upgrades or the SSD, you probably don't even need more than 4GB of ram (and if you do then replace it yourself) and you can replace the HDD with a SSD yourself much cheaper.

but most importantly what do you use the computer for?

thx, I fixed it! It's 8gb. And ty I now understand that a mac does get virus's!! Sorry, I was going by what I heard, I guess it just doesn't get as many!!?? or as often maybe!!?? So anyways. . .

- Would a 2.8 ghz DUAL core i7 with a 512 SSD - compare with a 2.2 QUAD Core i7 with a 750 SATA HDD???

- And overall regardless of speed which would you prefer a Lenovo or a Mac?

- FASTAMDMAN - what would you recommend then if I don't get either?

- BRO- Mostly using it for some gaming, school, lots of movie downloading and watching, lots of traveling, lots of software, web browsing, LOT and LOTS of pics and movie making, and similar such things! - I enjoy a lot of space and speed, and I want it to last so I don't mind if it's a lil over kill, I'd rather have too much than not enough!

Give me a budget and I will give you a good computer. The asus g74 / g73 or g53 line are simply amazing computers. You get reliability stacked with great hard ware at an amazing price.

in the past the mac os was not as widely used as it is today, so it wasnt much of a target. Now they are a becoming a larger target so there are more virus'es being written.

This comic says it all.

but on the more serious side of things. What are you going to be doing with this computer? If you are surfing the web, doing email then there will be no differences between the pc and the mac.

If you are into gaming, well mac has come along way (they now have steam!! ) but games are still a bit slow on getting to the mac side.

the mac will cost more then the pc, but will hold its value longer.

when it comes to upgrades, as mentioned before, do it your self. (for both the pc and the mac) you will save money.

THRILL- ty, that helps put it in perspective better- makes sense!! (and it's funny too lol)!! I'm realizing that a decent virus-protector is worth more than what I'll be spending on a Mac!

Give me a budget and I will give you a good computer. .

I will use the computer for many things such as school, some gaming, downloading movies, making movies/pics etc, watching tons of movies, lots of traveling, and of course the usual web browsing and etc!

My budget is about 1,000-1,300 and I like it fast, I am NOT PATIENT!! I want to click on something (everything) and have it right away!! lol and besides if I'm gonna pay for a good laptop then I'd rather have too much than not enough come later on!

Last question, what about screen resolution? I really like the asus g73 and g74's check them out on newegg. You can also find them used fairly cheap nowadays too!

Step 1: Go to Best Buy and play with a Core i5 Lenovo with Win 7 on it. Spend about ten minutes opening apps, cruising the web, whatever the machine will let you do.

Step 2: Turn around, walk over to their Apple area, play with a MBP for the same amount of time, doing the same things.

Step 3: Decide. If it takes you longer than this to know which OS appeals to you more, go home and come back another day for another try.
