Need Help Choosing CD-ROM Drive...

Greetings:

If one was to choose the best CD-ROM (Only) Drive, other then PLEXTOR, which would it be ?

I want this store to build my PC and the only component they don't have that I wanted is the Plextor CD-ROM. They do have the PLEXTOR burner, but not the CD-ROM only drive I wanted.

Please help me figure out the BEST CD-ROM only drive next to Plextor. IDE, not scsi

Do they have a Toshiba,Pioneer or Liteon DVDRom drive?

Toshiba is usually considered one of the best CD-ROMs. You won't go wrong with them. Pioneer is good also. But why not just get a DVD-ROM for a little extra $$??

I thought the DvD player would not be as fast and be more money.

Nope, DVD-ROMs usually have just as fast CD read speed (48x - 52x). It's worth the extra $$ just to have DVD support.

Get the toshiba , it's only $58. 16x DVD/48x CD-ROM.

Sony has a nice DVD-rom with 16x/52x now. Take a look at an Asus drive too, they seem to be nice.

I didn't know that Plextor made cd-rom only drives, but they probably do.

Storage Review puts Afree on top out of all of the IDE CD-ROM drives that they reveiwed.

I'd go with DVD-ROM instead of CD-ROM
soon software will be sold as DVD format,
and the fact that the price is not really far away.

I don't think Plextor has IDE CD-ROM, they only have SCSI model.
They have IDE on their CDR drive though.
Wow It's 40x-10x-40x ($209), it sure can copy a CD in less then 5 minutes.

Well back to the topic, I suggest you get the DVD Rom for the feature.
There is a lot of model at NewEgg for less than $50

"Only 512KB"?? Sir, how much do you consider enough, then? Toshiba no longer makes any CD-ROMs, because it makes the most sense to make just DVD-ROMs. CD-ROMs are really a thing of the past and I wouldn't consider them unless you're absolutely limited by your budget. But if you must avoid DVD-ROMs, I guess you can consider the TEAC CD-ROM which is the only one I could pick from Mwave. Plextor never made an IDE CD-ROM so you can forget about them.

Hehe If you want the fastest cd-rom around, look for the 72x True-x cdrom by Kenwood.
The price might shock you(over $100 US) and you will probably have a hard time finding one too.
