I am looking into getting a new modem (my old one is basically history). However, my expansion slots are almost full, and I am planning to put a couple more expansion cards in the free ones already. So I need to get an external modem.
First of all, which would be better -> a USB or a serial port modem? I'd like to get a USB modem, but I don't really know why.

Which company makes the best external modem? I know that 3COM and Diamond (now S3) makes a USB external modem.

I'd like to avoid spending muchos moolah on this, but I am willing to spend up to $90-$100...

...thanks...

I used to always use 3Com modems until I switched to DSL. I never had any probs at all. There shouldn't be any speed difference between serial or USB. USB is easier to install and configure.

Go to onvia.com and buy the Diamond SupraMAx 56k v90 modem...maybe been out for a while, but a very good modem for $ 65.90, no tax (?) and free shipping, but you'll need a free com port in yer 'puter to connect it.
