I want it for my new Laptop(Sony VAIO FZ160)
currently I'm using the 60 trial for Norton which was installed on it.

I'll be using solidworks, which takes up pretty much all of the ram.
I need something that won't slow it down.
Norton won't do it.
I use Kaspersky 6.0 on my desktop, haven't had any problems except that it gives virus alert every time I add two numbers in solidworks.

asking around people tell me that kaspersky or nod32 are my best options.
someone also suggested AVG free edition.

I'll be connected to the wireless network at the university all the time. an I know some sorry people who did the same without having a decent antivirus installed.

AVG Free Edition has a poor detection rate compared to it's competitors. (see The Antivirus Detection Rate Thread):
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...rd1=detection+AND+rate

[*]Kaspersky offers one of the highest (if not the highest) detection rate of all antivirus products
[*]Kaspersky has hourly updates (fastest new threat response time in the industry)
[*]Kaspersky uses a minimal amount of system resources:

Unfortunately, it is not perfect. A very small minority of users experience strange slow downs for certain webpages (anandtech.com being one of them), I believe it is isolated to certain Vista 64 system. Read more here:

I would strongly recommend trying Kaspersky before you buy it incase you are part of that minority. Their 30 day free trial (for KiS and KAV) can be found here:
http://www.kaspersky.com/trials

Once you buy it, all you have to do is enter your trial key and you are good to go, no reinstall.

If you want free, might I suggest AOL AVS? (Kaspersky based):

as far as system resources go for AVS:

What version you on, you might be surprised by the 07 and 08 releases...
