Need help choosing an AMD Dual Core CPU

Since I multitask quite a bit, I want to go dual core for my next build. I would like to run memory intensive apps such as Matlab, Video encoding, Firefox on Windows XP at the same time. I might also game a little bit with CS:S. Right now, I have my eyes on the Athlon X2 3800+ Machester.

I probably will get the Asus A8N32-SLi Mobo.

Are there any other similar dual core processors that are faster for my needs?

Thanks.

The Opteron 165 is a good alternative for o/c as it has 2x1mb cache. If you don't plan on o/c the 3800+ will be faster due to the 200Mhz more than the 165.

Matlab - Use opteron.. you can up to 170 or 175.. more expensive if you're not overclocking. matlab benefits from cache.. i have xeons with 4mb cache running it..

So it's a lower clock speed and a larger cache for the Opteron vs. a higher clock speed and a smaller cache for the X2.

but with very little effort you could overclock the opteron to the speeds of the 3800+, most seem to be able to overclock to 2.4-2.6Ghz without too much trouble, so getting the opteron to run @ 2 Ghz would be very easy.

Not entirely true, the extra 2x512 cache has been shown to make the chips about equal.

Almost all opteron with Decent steppings get just as good clock speeds as the X2 OC'd on air so yes you will benifit. Also no matter what CPU you use higher than a 3000+ you won't see any bottle necking with CSS
