had to move my computer across the house and now my connection drops out and speedtest.net days my speed is sometimes very very low and fluctwates . my adapter is about 7 years old so i figure it's time to replace it . from what i can tell 802.11AC is the latest and greatest and is backwards compatible with the old wireless standards . it'll be a while before i can get a new 802.11AC router to go with it , but i like being able to take advantage of the newer tech when my money allows . am i correct in assuming that 802.11AC is the best way to go ? or should i save a few bucks and stick with a 802.11b/g/n version .

also , are the usb adapters with external dual antennas really better at longer ranges than their non external antenna counterparts ?

it's been several years since i've bought any networking devices so i'm not really up to date on what's available or best for home use .

thanks , Jeff

Go with a PCI 802.11n card. It may be a good idea to buy the same make as the router. Not necessary though. Depending on where the pc is located, if it's a room or floor away from the router, pick up a directional antenna for $20-ish and point it at the router.
