Need help choosing a router

So I haven't bought a router in years. My last purchase was a Netgear N300 probably 2-3 years ago and I ended up giving that to my Dad. I was tethering off my phone since then but now I am getting a land line again and need a new router. Apparently things are much more expensive than the $50 I spent before.

Im looking at the AC routers since I rarely upgrade my routers in the first place I am expecting this to last 5+ years. I don't really notice speed differences and I typically only have 1 or 2 devices hooked up to it but would like the possibility of expanding in the future if I move out to some place bigger. Also reading about the personal home cloud storage seems pretty cool as well.

At first I was looking at the Asus RT-AC66U and the Netgear R6300v2, both at $180 and they seem pretty good but I keep being enticed by the fact that the next step up is only $20-40. I'm not sure if that cost is worth it to move from AC1750 to AC1900?

The Asus RT-AC68U which comes out to $220 but that's pretty hefty and I'm not sure if I want to spend that much. The Netgear R7000 is $200 and I've had a pretty good experience with them but reviews keep saying their support falters.

Any advice?

Well, this is a great place for opinions and for getting confirmation on what direction you might wanna go, but to start out you may wanna check out some websites like

I also have my favorites depending on how much $$$ is playing a factor and how much I want to be involved in a set up vs. just plug and play.

A Ubiquiti setup is great but a little more complicated to get set up. The N7000 would probably be my choice if money doesn't matter. It does though, so I am using a TP-Link Archer C7 and I am quite happy with it. The Asus routers have quickly become the gold standard (AC66x and AC68U).

Also in my opinion, the jump from, AC1750 to AC1900 is more of a "I don't think I'll ever actually need or utilize the difference but I have an extra $40 so just in case...." type of situation.

But like I said, only you know your situation. Check out reviews and some ideas and there are tons of people that will help steer you in the right direction.

Hm I wonder if it was a price mistake or some sort of flash drop. Bought it at $129.99. 15 minutes later it's back to $179.99. Oh well got a steal 😀
