Need Help Choosing a Router

Hi I Currently have 1 computer and just recently order another one. I need to connect this 2 computer to the internet so im gonna buy a router, I never use a router before so I don't know a lots of things about this stuff.

I only need something to connect 2 computer to the internet and have no need of wireless. For me what is important is the speed and stability of the connection. (99% of the time DL stuff and playing online games)

Im on a DSL modem (PPPOE) so my question is do i have to look for some special particularity in a router or any router gonna do the job?

Some special settings needed to have it properly working or its easy?! Tips are welcome 🙂

I'm partial to Netgear routers. Others have their own preferences.

If you decided to go Netgear, I would suggest the RP614. They can be found very reasonably priced online and often with rebates.

At the Netgear site you can download the guide and manual and familiarize yourself with the setup. I would do this and post back with any questions you have.

With a PPPoE connection your Modem is undoubtedly doing your login for you. The Router is capable of doing this login also. (XP can do it too)

What's important is to not have the Router and Modem both trying to do the login. The Router can be configured to let the Modem handle the login. In turn, a lot of Modems can be configured to let the Router handle the login.

Thank you im gonna dl a manual just to familiarize myself.

Your explantion of the PPPoE connection and login make things more clear for me, This is the thing I wasn't sure about.

The netgear RP614 is a good router, been using it for years for the exact same setup that you're describing. Linksys also makes quality products. IMO, avoid belkin and dlink, have had problems.

Netgear RP614 is sooooooo gooood! This is a fool proof router with easy to setup instructions. It is very stable and rarely goes down. The price is just right too. I saw a combo deal at Compusa.com for this router and another wireless adapter (Netgear Wg111) for 39.00. Alone i think this router is about 29.00. There is a special at newegg.com and buy.com

2. http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?s...ype=PE&Category=Comp&Gad=0&dcaid=15889

There are combos of Netgear Wireless Router on sale for less than $30.

The Wireless Router is more modern than the 614, and if you do not want the Wireless, you can switch it Off.

In addition, you get a PCMCIA Card that you can use, it or give it as a gift.

:sun:

I found a Netgear WGT624 with a 50$ Rebate and with this rebate he cost 59$ CND, the WGR614 with a 20$ rebate is 59$ and the RP614 is 69$ with no rebate.

The WGT624 with a price like this seems a good deal.

WRT54G / GS. Make sure to get the non-latest versions, as they just cut the RAM & flash, thus killing the third party firmware that's a lot of why these units are good. Google for details - WRT54G v5 and WRT54GS v4 are the problem units, the serial # can tell you that flavor is inside the box.

Thanks, Linksys, for making life difficult 🙁
