Need help choosing a PCI video card

Ok guys I have a nasty Dell with no agp port. Its a P3-800 with 128mb ram on XP. I know it sucks but I am tight on cash. I know you guys are thinking why would you buy a system with out an AGP port if you are gona play games? my answer, I baught a voodoo5 pci, and if you guys remember the pci and agp version of the voodoo 5 had the same peformance, so I cheaped out on the system and got a nonagp system. Now I have a problem, I wana play games I have been deprived for way too long. I wana be able to play C&C generals and some other first person shooters and be able to play the new game comming out such as half life 2. I understand even if I get these games to work they will be not playable above even 800x600, but I can live with that .... So I need a video card, a PCI card that will do this.. I have three choices

1) ATI 7500 64MB (DDR I think) $129
2) PNY verto GeForce FX 128mb (ddr) $139
3) PNY Georce4 MX 420 (sdram) $69

I was leaning towards option #2, but my p3-800 may limit the card and not allow me to enjoy the full potential of the card, so I was thinking #3 its cheap and will play games for now and should be ok with the p3-800.... I am not sure about the ATI card though.... Keep in mind I am running a P3 800, and cards will be limited to the processor.

can you guys help me out to make the decision of a life time (just kidding) well it is kinda for me since it will determine if I will be able to play all the grate games out right now. If you guys know of any reviews of these cards, I have looked but all are AGP reviews. Thanks in advance ...

Well, as you can read in this PCI video card review, the PNY 5200 PCI is the best card of the bunch you listed. The MX420 and 7500 PCI are about on par with each other, so the price you listed for the 7500 PCI is WAY overpriced. If you had a P4-based system, I would advise you to get the PNY 5200 PCI, but like you said, the cards will be limited by your processor. In that case, I would advise you to get the MX 420 and save whatever cash you have left over and put it towards a newer system with an AGP slot. I think that even with the top PCI video card available, you're not going to be playing HL2 with the system you have, unless you want to do 640x480x16, or somesuch. Sorry. 🙁

#1 is fairly slow and overpriced, #2 is also not good for what you get, and #3 sucks ass (ew, sdram?!). See if you can find an radeon 8500/9100. It will be faster than any of the other cards you listed. I don't know about what they run in canada, but they can be found for around $60 in the US.

modedepe> THe cards you are talking about the 8500/9100 are they in PCI format and do you think they will be limited by my p3-800

Mloot> you are soo right and in the back of my mind I always knew that, but I taught maybe the FX5200 cird might be able to play some of the new games...

Yes, the 9100 PCI 128mb is available in PCI, and it's currently the best PCI card you can buy.

Check out Tigerdirect/Canada.

Looks like you can get the 9100 PCI for about the same price you listed for the MX420. And yes, your processor will limit the card some, but you might as well get the best PCI card you can get for that price. Not too shabby, and it should outperform the MX420 by a long shot, even with your CPU.
