I currently have a Lexmark X83 multifunction printer. Bought it 16 months ago and have gone through only 2 sets of cartridges. I bought a new color cart 3 months ago and it's gone bad after only 20 pages or so. With printer prices pretty low I would DEFINITELY consider a new printer vice buying a new set of overpriced Lexmark carts. The question is which brand/model?

Here is what I need: I require decent, but not top-of-the-line print quality and I need copy capability. Other issues include a unit that is reliable and one with cartridges that can be bought new or remanufactured for cheap! This printer is mostly used for my kids school work. The X83 was great while it lasted but it is time to move on.

All of your comments are greatly appreciated ...

Hp d135/145/155. Occasionally these go on sale for 100 bucks or below. Got mine for 50 (lotta coupons, pm, rebates) plus an 80 giftcard at staples. Mostly retails for 400+.
-non refillable catridges, as they have some kinda ink meter chip built in them.

HP 750, 2110. First is discontinued, second is their main non-fax PSC machine. Same type of catridges used in most of their current deskjet/photosmart printers.

Epson and canon have a few multifunctions as well. Canon catrdiges are much easier to refill, especially that whole bci-3e series.

My budget is $200. When buying printers the local Staples is the way to go. Lately they have had special offers (gift cards) on many of their multifunctions plus their coupons. My main concern (other than copying/printing) is consumables. I'm tired of hearing the Lexmark "voice" anounce to me that "color cartridge is low" when I've only printed 20 pages in 3 months!

I have an HP 990cxi. it works quite well, it even flips papers over and prints on the other side, all by itself. :) It also has an IR port on it for printing from your laptop/palm etc. I think it cost me about $120 cdn a couple months back.

i don't know how much they are now, but I have the HP K80xi and i like it.

one point to note tho. HP paper feeders are all under where the paper comes out, it takes it completely around. the Epsons and Canons have paper feeders on the back therefore there is less bending of paper. this is important (i think) if you want to print thick paper. i think the Canon and Epson handle thick paper better than HP.

Canon i550. $149.99 (before coupons and a $30 mail-in rebate.) It's been a great printer so far - and the tanks can be re-filled. Yeah! :)
