People have said that this mobo is pretty finicky with upgrades, so whats a good modem to pair this with? I have a budget of about $30, since this will be more of an Internet/MS Office-heavy PC for my sisters. I dont mind OEMs, and Ive looked at some creative labs, Zoom, and Diamond modems, but not sure which is the best for the money. USR modems seem to be on the higher end, around $60. The PC has a 900MHz Duron (I think), 256MB PC133, 40GB Maxtor D740X running Win2K. Im gonna install my old RivaTNT 16MB (PCI) in it along with the modem.

built a couple systems using the PCtel AMR modems for dog dirty cheapo poo...that's right, like 10 bucks a modme..CPU utilization seems fair enough...they connect at over 50kbit/sec...good stuff..

people will rip them, and i think for mostly unwarranted reasons...yes, the modems aren't feature packed, they aren't completely awesome, but that's NOT what u expect for 10 bucks...(canadian!)...and they don't take up a PCI slot (if that matters to us)...for my personal use, i woudln't get anything but..they support voice/fax/etc as well...

then again, i have cable, but i have thoroughly used these modems and have had NO problem whatsoever...using winxp.

I picked up 4 Zoom 56k pci in the refurbished bin for $9.00 each at newegg a couple weeks ago. All 4 worked real well too. If they don't have the refurbished I'd suggest getting the OEM they have. Good modem fur sure, and no ones better that newegg to deal with!

I have two comps with that mobo, and though it may have a finicky rep, I wouldn't sweat it as to what modem to throw in there.

I always use budget modems and NICs.

I had an expensive 3com modem a few years back and it was a dog.
