Need Help Choosing a Laptop...

So I've decided that I want a laptop that is extremely portable and I'll sacrifice performance for size. I've seen the Sony VAIO super slim and it looks nice, but then I found the Sony VAIO VX Series and it seems like a great lightweight laptop. It is a little bigger in terms of dimensions since it has the 14" display, but it's just as thin and light as most ultra portables (e.g. super slim, toshiba tecra, dell latitude, etc.). So what do you think? The VX series looks like just what I want, but I'm curious if anyone knows anything about it or Sony laptops in general. If you have any other ideas for ultra-portable laptops, feel free to let me know. Thanks.

Have you thought about the fujitsu S series?? you can find it at Fujitsupc.com

That laptop is 1.0ghz, and carries a 13 inch screen. The weight I think is about 4lbs, and price is about 1700USD

Hmmmmmmmm...I've never seen the Fujitsu before, but it looks like a very nice laptop as well and I think it may now be between the Fujitsu S Series and the Sony VX Series. Has anyone had any experience with either? Has anyone had any experience with a Fujitsu laptop in general?

PC Mag has spoken highly of the Dell Latitudes, although I haven't actually seen one in action, I tend to put some faith in their reviews. At least give Dell a serious look, you might come out with a good bargain.

Gateway 200? I currently have a Portege 3020ct and was thinking of upgrading to the Portege 2000, but after hearing of some problems, I'm thinking the Gateway 200 might be a better buy even though it is .25 inches thicker.

I just bought an HP Pavilion xf315 for $1098 + tax. I like it, CDRW/DVD combo, 14.1 screen, 1.2 gz mobile duron, 256 mb RAM.

Go with the Dell C400, just grabed one of these from eBay for $1375. It was a tradeoff of slightly more weight (3.6lbs) compared to the extreme ultra's like the Dell X200 (2.8lbs), Gateway 200 (3lbs) & the Toshiba Protege 2000 (2.6lbs) for better overall performance. For the 3.xlbs category you won't find a more powerful machine, I bought the 1.2GHz version, there's also a 866MHz version that should be available for around $1000 via eBay. I did alot of research on light lappies & found the Sony's had a very bad reputation for repairs which turned me off, the Dell C400 & IBM Thinkpad X21/X22/X23 line came out on top in most reviews I checked.

"...Ever thought of getting a Mac?..."

The original poster asked about an ultraportable, which is usually considered 4 lbs. or less.

Apple doesn't make them this light.

get a dell latitude. i highly recommend them. i've setup a handful for users at my work and had zero problems and they work like a charm.

Just a note, the Dell Latitude 200 is the exact same laptop as the Gateway 200

The Gateway has a 933Mhz chip vs. 800 or 850 in the Dell. Last time I checked, the Gateway bundle was also a better overall deal.

Samsung makes this model.

Take a look at the Compaq Evo N600c and N610c series.

Very light, very thin. Under 5lbs, 1.2 inches thin.
But has 14 inch screen and an optical drive.
The 610 has 2 USB 2.0 ports which I think is huge.

Kind of pricey though.
