Hey guys,

Just finished a new build and am waiting for parts to arrive. The only thing I don't have is a new monitor. My current monitor is a Sony (SDM-HS95) 19" LCD with max resolution of 1280x1024 that I bought ~4 and 1/2 years ago.

I am looking to pair this new rig with a new 23" 1920x1280 monitor. I have read a crazy amount of reviews. One I am basing a lot off of is this over at X-bit. I am a med student so spend a lot of time reading on the net (medical articles and pdf files), but enjoy gaming in my spare time. My gaming includes Demigod, Civilization IV, Company of Heroes, Tropico 3, and Fallout 3. So, mostly RTS with some FPS and TBS thrown in. I also watch movies, but mostly (70&#37😉 on my projector (this could change since projector is only 1024x768). I would prefer to not buy a monitor again for 4-ish years. Should I go with the Acer 235HZ or Samsung SyncMaster P2370 or something else entirely?

I obviously don't currently have an NVIDIA card, but do hope to game in 3D when a standard rolls out (hopefully before 2 years). Looking for something future proof (as if that is possible). Hope to buy soon, so that I can have it when everything arrives (plan to order in 48 hrs.).

My new rig is:

Silverstone FT02-B
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
Core i7 930
Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme-1366 RT Rev. C CPU Heatsink
CORSAIR XMS3 6GB DDR3 1600 @ 7-8-7-20
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5850
SeaSonic X650 Gold 650W Power Supply

I would go with a Dell 24" U2410 because of the IPS LCD panel, the picture quality and viewing angles will be alot better then TN panels. Just read the review and comments about it from the link below. They are not to badly priced on eBay, but still expensive.

If you decide to go with a cheaper TN LCD panel, have you looked at the new Samsung LED backlit one, looks really sexy, but it's a TN panel.

Interestingly, this great but cheap 24" screen with inbuilt speakers (they are nice btw) is not for sale in the US as per my search. The screen is really nice though, affordable and just fine for gaming, and everyday use. 2ms response time, 1920x1080, 60hz.

Unfortunately no online retail store is selling this model in the US. Tough luck for the Americans on this one.

It's old technology with 5ms response time, I'd consider the options I recommended.

Old technology because it has 5mn response time? It was just released 2 weeks ago 😛

It's an ips-panel, which got great reviews all over the net (for the price your paying).

It really depends on how anal you are with screens. I don't care much for ips/pva, because I'm not bothered about colors as much as some others are. TN is just as fine for reading lots of documents as an ips-panel.

IPS/PVA panels have better viewing angles though, which might be nice if you intend watching movies with 2 or more people. TN has better response though, so less ghosting. But IPS/PVA is considerably more expensive.

Also, I wouldn't worry about a 120hz-screen. They are expensive right now, and imo kinda suck. You might as well buy a 'cheap' non 120hz-screen right now, which in all other ways equals those 120hz-screens, and buy a 120hz-screen in 2 years when 3d has really taken off.

For bang for the buck solution I would keep it cheap and get something like this:

Option1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-049-_-Product
Option2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-167-_-Product
Option3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-184-_-Product

Pros--all are 24", all have 2ms response times. Options 1 and 2 come with in-built speakers (very handy imo)
I'd say just get the Asus (option 1).

Can't find any reviews for the acer, you know of any???

I haven't seen any formal reviews and I've searched. If uyou have any do share.

I am thinking you may be right about going with a reasonably priced TN Panel for now. Doubt I will upgrade in two years, but I'll manage somehow.
