I'm trying to figure out which SSD will last me the longest without failing.

I've narrowed my choices down to the Samsung 830 128GB, or the Plextor M5S of M3.

I am also thinking about Kingston HyperX as well, but I heard that Sandforce drives are better off avoided.
I think Samsung uses its own parts, while the Plextor is Marvell-based.

Which one of these would be the most reliable? My laptop goes up to SATA II, so I'm only looking at these SSDs in terms of being reliable and long-lasting

Samsung for sure. Stay away from sandforce (except intel) if you want reliability.

The 830's are bulletproof.

Just got a Plextor M3 not the fastest horse in the race but

5 year warranty...I'm very happy.

1) Windows 7 Ultimate installed in 9 minutes (SRS)

2) Boot Time 14 seconds From windows start

3) Excellent Garbage Collection

4) ZERO problems with the Marvel Controller

I have the Plextor M3 in my main rig. I love it.

I have 3 Plextors, and three Samsungs, and they've all been terrific, as has been my one Intel 330. I have some others, but those three - Plextor, Samsung, Intel - remain my preferred brands.

By the way, on the latest Plextor model (the M5) and the latest Intel (the 330) those companies cut back the warranty to three years as a way to further cut cost and remain price competitive.

Samsung and Plextor are very nearly the same speed. Samsung is more reliable, so I'd go with them.

Yeah, I think either a Samsung 830 or a Plextor will last long on my laptop.

The drives I'm gonna stay away from are the OCZs and the Sandforce ones

You got it. Choosing an SSD is easy these days. If you want the best value (i.e., good performance and quality at a good price) then get a Samsung 830. If you want the best performance and quality, a 5 year warranty, and lowest power consumption, get a Plextor M3P (or soon, M5P).

I think the order goes like this for SSDs:

1. Samsung 830/Plextor M3 Pro Tie
2. Plextor M3
3. Crucial M4

For the Marvells or Samsungs, it's something like that. I don't think the average user notices much difference though

I chose the Plextor because it's a little better on power and I got a really good deal on it...

I think a Marvell controller might be a little more reliable than Samsung's own controller...Marvell is used by many other brands, so there's a little bit more of a network for it
