need help building new budget pc

Hola, I've built a pc once and it wasn't a great experience. I've done my research into those online custom pc companies (and all the complaints that come along with them). My current rig is AGP based and my processor is an ancient AthlonXP (1.6ghz). I'd like to get a totally new setup and keep my current hard drives, that's it. The problem for me comes in that I have between $750 and 800 to spend. I'm also totally confused now that since 2003 (when I upgraded last), there's PCI express, SLI, more complicated power supplies, and GASP dual-core processors. I need help in a major way.

I generally do a lot of multi-tasking, some gaming, and a ton of cd/dvd burning. I do plan on running Vista, I'm really a newb when it comes to overclocking (but I am savvy enough to find my way around the BIOS settings), and my drives are IDE, and I don't plan on keeping my ancient cdrw/dvdrw drive. My goals are to get a dual-core system with a dependable motherboard 1-2 gbs of RAM, and a PCI express card that will last me a long while. I've heard that Intel's Dual Cores are MUCH better than AMD's...is that true?

The case is another area where I am going blind (I prefer a black mid-tower. my wife wants LEDs). SLI doesn't seem to be of interest to me since I'm not a hardcore gamer. I also don't need a monitor. I've thought of going to Dell or HP, but their cases aren't manual hardware upgrade friendly and I'd like to upgrade various things when I feel like it. I generally do a lot of multi-tasking, some gaming, and a ton of cd/dvd burning.

Any and all help is appreciated!!!!!!

Depending on what you really have to spend and such my current thread isn't too bad, you can cut back on the video and such when trying to save some cash, also the mobo is prob a bit more than you really need but all the reset i like, from all i have read and heard the C2D out perform the X2 and 64bit processors, depending on what you do 1gb ram may support you as opposed to the 2gb i have listed. all im missing in my list is my DVD drive which is going to run me like 30 or so. do you plan on doing alot of gameing or high end graphics, if not i dn't see that you would need sli just get a good vid card and be happy. Are you building one pc or 2, i ask since you were saying u wanted black and ur wife wanted led's.. get her her own case and toys.. LOL.. keeps my wife off my back, plz feel free to ask ne questions and welcome to the boards..
