Need Help Building a Restaurant Point of Sale System

My family owns a small restaurant which has been in business for over 12 years - without a Point of Sale System. For the most part, things run pretty well. However, I noticed that servers sometimes make errors on the orders, handwriting is not very clear at times, drink orders are mistakingly omitted, etc.

So I decided to take on this project, knowing that some of these systems are available for many thousands of dollars.

Any recommendations on hardware (Touchscreen monitors, ticket & kitchen printers, cash drawers, magnetic card swipers, etc.) & software (Hopefully opensource or freeware) would be greatly appreciated.

This looks a buyers beware market. There are hundreds of POS Software and hardware vendors. What you are really interested in is does the software support your business model and does it make the reports you want to see. The reason for this software is suppose to be to manage your business.

PepBoys uses Linux based POS software.

acfchef: There's tons of different stuff out there. Look into IBM or NCR business partners as a vendor. I'm not sure about where you live, but STCR is one that is prominent in the New England/NY area.
