My friend lives in an apartment complex and with a wireless notebook, was only able to receive low or very low signal strengths on a "linksys" network. Someone at work told me something about going to "192.168.1.1" and changing the settings, which I knew nothing about.

The signal was very sporadic, rarely able to DL large files, but at times it would DL at 40kb/sec. She now has a desktop and I want to get her some sort of wireless device so she can receive a consistant signal. What should I do? Someone also suggested going with an access point and an antenna, and I've read a little about making your own antennas. What do you guys here suggest?

Just a topic I'd like to start myself; hope no one minds me threadjacking :)

Neway, I'm staying in a 2 storey house and my Linksys B router is on the ground floor. I have another PC (fitted with a DLink G wireless PCi card) on the first floor which is rather far away and I'm only getting a "Low" signal strength. Strangely, when I ping the router from the PC, I sometimes get timeouts. Is this normal?

TIA

Yeah, it is Normal.

Being at the edge of the Wireless distance the signal is probably weak and unstable.
