Need help...big time.

I just bought a new monitor and I unplugged the old monitor from the vid card and plugged in the new monitor. When I booted, I heard a long beep and nothing showed up on the monitor. I unhooked the new monitor from the vid card and plugged in the original monitor I was using and when I booted basically the same thing happened, a long beep and nothing showed up on the monitor, not even the POST. The only difference is that with the original monitor hooked up the computer will load Windows. I can tell from the hard drive activity and because I can shut the computer down using the correct Windows keystrokes. With the new monitor hooked up Windows doesn't load and I have to turn off the PC using the power button.

Sind the POST doesn't even show up I'm guessing it's not a problem with Windows. My guess is there's a problem with the vid card. Can a monitor hose a vid card?

One other thing to note is that before I shut my PC down to install the new monitor I went to Windows device manager and uninstalled the old monitor. But I don't think this should have done anything wrong.

So what can I do? I don't have another vid card that I can swap in.

Per chance, did you unseat the video card?

what monitors? what video card? are you using an agp-dvi or dvi-agp adapter? put in the old monitor, and let it run. how long did you wait before shutting down windows? maybe windows will find the monitor and install it. anyway, you shouldnt have uninstalled your monitor.

I opened up the case and the video card looks ok. It's screwed in tightly to the chassis so I don't think it could have moved.

The new monitor is a Viewsonic P95f+ and the old monitor is a Dell. I'm using a ATI 9700 Pro. I'm not using any kind of adapter. I don't think I waited more than a minute before shutting down Windows. But shouldn't the POST have showed up? And the long beep I hear when I boot worries me because it used to be a short beep.

Try pulling out the video card completely and reseating it in the AGP slot again, sometimes it can look like it's seated ok but reseating it can fix the problem.

Still worth looking into. Unplug the PSU, take out the video card, carefully reinstall, try again.

Edit: Was going to suggest MB manual, saw that biostud posted that while i was typing.

You guys were correct, the video card was slightly askew. I gave it a good push into the slot and everything is working now.

If I knew you guys I would buy you a beer but instead you'll have to settle for this :beer:
